Since this is the first overture you have made to contact me in about a year, and I no longer have any contact with Richard by his choice, I can draw two conclusions.

First, this is your way of trying to say you would like to reestablish a friendship. This I would welcome, though not without some caution. My email addresses are also the same and I am open to dialog.

Or, your perceived responsibility toward social decorum includes rote Thank you and Congratulatory notes, but not conflict resolution. Rather repudiation of friendship without discussion. Be this the case, you are welcome to continue your previously chosen course. For myself, formality, without the foundation of friendship, is little more than pretense.

You are welcome to give the gift to Richard as he and I were still on speaking terms until his recent choice to cut of contact with email and IM friends.

Do tell him I miss his friendship as well.
