Gattaca Review
As Ethan Hawke walks into his work one morning he stumbles upon his co-workers gathered next to his bosses office with the floor covered with blood. Vincent (played by Hawke) was an ordinary boy born the natural way with no DNA enhancements. Even though that may seem regular now in the “not so distant future” most children are genetically enhanced giving the child the best aspects of both parents. Right from birth Vincent was analyzed given a 99% probability of death. From there on Vincent's dreams of going into space were haltered by the rest of the world whose society was dictated by DNA analysis. The only thing that kept Vincent persistent from fulfilling his dream was beating hid genetically enhanced brother in a swimming match.
He soon meets up with Jerome (McGregor), who once was a power genetically enhanced man. With Jerome now paralyzed Vincent switches identities so he may fulfill his dreams. Vincent soon gets a job at Gattaca and goes through many hardships to fake his identity including using Jerome’s urine and blood for frequent tests given by the company. Vincent is soon given an opportunity to go to space and fulfill his dream but with his boss’s death and his real DNA identified can he make it to space with only the help of Uma Thurman and Jerome?
Gattaca’s theme though set in a science fiction environment is still a predominate one. Given the environment with totally different ways of social casting by DNA, this movie makes you think. What if genetic enhancement became the norm for families? Would society start to discriminate people by blood as in the movie? Even though there was a murder this movie is more of a slow drama then anything else. With a very detailed sets and great cinimatography this movie is well worth the 2 dollars to rent it.
