Now that I'm finished with school it's time to work on some SCA projects I don't have time for during the semester. I need a dress for a Court of Love event in February, so I'm making some lace for the stomacher and cuffs and I'm making some edge lace for a ruff (although I'm okay if I don't finish that before the event).
Sourcing:
I have downloaded several hundred lace patterns that span 1570 to 1630. I chose my cuff pattern from a pattern found in the book "Renaissance Patterns for Lace, Embroidery, and Needlepoint". This book doesn't specify the time period of each lace pattern, but judging from similar styles of lace I would guess it is from around 1570-1590. The style of lace was a bit more simple and depended more on the geometric shapes. This is the original pattern
From this I derived my own pattern. I realized that even with a more simple pattern, some of the shapes were beyond my current skill level. I also wasn't crazy about the circles on the outside edge so I changed the shape entirely.
The stomacher took a little more time. Originally I was going to use a pattern that I found that looked like a stomacher, but I decided the pattern was too complex and the shape wasn't appropriate. I felt it was better to draw a pattern that was within my ability. I really liked this pattern:
I didn't change it very much, but there area few subtle differences. Mostly I changed things for practical reasons. If I was concerned about connections or the integrity of the lace I made a change. This is the finished pattern:
I haven't mounted the lace patterns yet. I bought a new pin vice to save my fingers and it should arrive today or tomorrow. When it gets here I will mount the pattern and sew the anchors.
