My grandmother died on Wednesday last week. It has been a very painful experience. I loved my grandmother very much (both of my grandparents really). My grandmother influenced everything from the clothes I wore (she had incredible taste in clothing, shoes, and hats), to my sewing. She was a hairdresser for years until she retired. She used to burn my head all the time when I came to visit because she always wanted to straighten it and style it. Lye was still in straighteners in those days and that's how you knew it was done. She was always extremely encouraging of my learning to sewing and working in the apparel industry. For my last fashion show at WSU she and grandpa flew out to see it and she made a beautiful dress herself to wear to it. :) I had to pack up that dress yesterday and all of her other beautiful clothes yesterday. We are donating it to here church (she was so small by the time she died nothing she had fits me except a few items).
I'm her only granddaughter and she never had any daughters, so everything comes to me. She left me a new sewing machine, some beautiful jewelry, and a mink coat that you just have to touch to believe. I was pretty amazed when grandpa brought that out of storage and gave it to me.
My poor grandfather is so heartbroken. They were married since 1947 and I've never seen a more devoted husband! He has been spending most of his time at the mortuary with her during the viewing times. It's painful to watch such a strong man crying. My dad and brother also flew to Michigan and it is just as hard to see my dad cry over the loss of his mother. The internment is tomorrow.
I'm going to stay with grandpa the longest, but I'm also the closest to him so that's okay. I think he'll be okay, but it will be hard for awhile. He also has grandma's nieces and nephews that live in the area to keep him company if he needs it. That makes me feel better.
She was just an incredible person.
