Volcanos are better than airplanes!

In a truly classic example of how to look like you have no idea what you're talking about, a reporter discussing the potential effects of an ongoing eruption on Europe's economy had this to say: "The climate, too, might benefit from the absence of polluting aircraft in the sky, though the cancellation of 100,000 or so flights would amount to just a blip on the rising graph of the world's carbon emissions."

Have we considered this statement carefully? I'm thinking not.

Now, I'm no vulcanologist or climatologist, but I'm fairly sure that a massive volcanic eruption, spewing sufficient ash, dirt, noxious gases, and other things into the atmosphere to force an extended grounding of airplanes is, in fact, significantly worse for the climate than a few hundred thousand airplane flights.
