Oh, look at that, it was Jaina coming by on purpose, of her own free will. If she wasn't fairly comfortable getting around in the dark, she might not have bothered.

Okay, that was a lie.

"A lot of people probably wouldn't be at work right now," she said from the doorway.

Anakin's face lit up when he saw her.

Not that he'd admit to that.

"I'm a workaholic," he said. "That's fairly well established."

This particular workaholic raised an eyebrow. "Which means you're working on class, I assume."

"Finished that already," he said, waving a hand. "Now I'm working on improving infant safety on this planet."

He was probably lucky she chose not to mess with him on that subject so John didn't get really really killed.

"I got called home last week," she said, going for a safer topic. Which, it wasn't really a safer topic but it was one that Jaina felt way more comfortable with.

Anakin nodded, watching her eyes. "I noticed," he said quietly.

There was almost even a smile on her face when she said, "Jacen's alive."

Because who needed padding.

This was a man who'd kept a marriage secret from a Temple full of beings trained in ferreting out the truth.

In less than an eyeblink he'd compartmentalized everything he'd discovered when he'd met Jacen, what knew about what had happened to Ben--and what he'd put together on his own--and focused on Jaina, his emotions the correct balance of wariness and cautious optimism. "He is?" he said, smiling back. "That's wonderful news!"

He was an incredibly stubborn man. He would believe that this was wonderful news.

Jaina didn't buy it. She'd been expecting more outward shock and was almost disappointed she didn't get it, but if he knew anything about what Ben's Jacen was doing, she didn't believe for a second that he wouldn't hold a grudge against hers.

"Uh huh," she said, raising an eyebrow.

"'Always in motion is the future,'" Anakin quoted softly. "Your Jacen won't become his Jacen."

If Anakin had to stand in the way with a lightsaber to prevent it.

Oddly, his reaction was kind of pissing her off. Where was the overreaction and the yelling? She'd been prepared for it for weeks.

"You seem more convinced of that than I was," she admitted.

"Would it be better if I rephrased?" Anakin asked. "What he has done to Ben in one version of the galaxy will never be allowed to be repeated."

Jaina frowned. "You do realize that's not up to you, right?"

"It's up to you," Anakin said flatly. "You're the one who knows all of the players."

That was an interesting answer. "Actually, it's up to Jacen, unless I missed something."

"Everyone needs a safety net," Anakin said quietly. "It's up to Jacen, but you know what's happened in other versions. That makes you the safety net." He blew out a breath. "When Qui-Gon was here, I didn't tell him how he died, but I damn well taught him how to prevent his center better."
