It is done.
The torch had been passed from one to another; the duty to protect from the Master to his Apprentice. Only the fittest...the one with the most poisonous blood had survived the Final Blood Ritual. The red thread that binds the Master to his Apprentice had been permanently severed and a new Pisces Gold Saint had emerged.
Albafica cradled the lifeless body of Pisces Rugonis. He wept loudly, regretting what he had done, to cause the death of his beloved master. He regretted that night 4 years ago when he agreed to do the Blood Ritual, the exchange of their blood, with his master. Now his blood had killed his master, proving that it is more poisonous than that of his master.
Rugonis was more than just a master to Albafica. He was the only person Albafica had known all his life and saw as his father even though they were not related by blood. Rugonis had raised Albafica since after he was born, when Rugonis found him 16 years ago, abandoned among the poisonous rose bushes on the outskirts of The Sanctuary. He took in the little crying child with the tuff of Ice Blue hair and raised him as his own. Rugonis had never found out who Albafica’s parents were or where they were from though he can guess why the child was given up. The only thing that connects Albafica to his past was a little pendent his parents had left on him and Albafica had worn it all the time till now.
Albafica screamed in pain at the starless night sky, cursing at the hands of fates that had led him to this pain of separation. He hated this night and he hated himself for what he had done tonight.
Suddenly, a hand cupped the shoulder of Albafica tenderly from behind. Between his watery eyes, Albafica looked up and saw Defteros kneeing behind him.
“You have to let him go, Albafica,” Defteros said. “He’s gone now and will never return even if you cry blood tears.”
Albafica tried to wipe away the tears from his now red eyes.
“I killed him, Defy! I had killed my master with my own blood!” Albafica sobbed.
Defteros looked at the young man before him. A little sweet boy he used to babysit that had grown into a fine young man. All these years, Albafica had lived within the cocoon of the tender care of Rugonis and The Sanctuary, seldom stepping beyond its borders into the outside world or see suffering in the world beyond. And as the boy matured into a young man, he now faced the first of many future painful experience of his life; the pain of seeing a death before his very eyes and the pain of parting from a loved one. Defteros hugged Albafica.
Albafica tried to pull away from the comforting embrace of Defteros, fearing his poisonous blood will next kill his best friend.
“Don’t touch me! I don’t want to kill you too!” Albafica screamed.
Defteros continued to hug Albafica tightly.
“Your blood will not harm me, Albafica. I spent too long a time with you and Rugonis-sama that I had probably developed immunity to your poison.” Defteros replied.
“Now, now, this is what Rugonis-sama had wanted, for you to take over his place as the Pisces Gold Saint. He knew you will become stronger, more powerful than he ever will be, and be more brave and ready to face the Holy War that is to come one day in our lifetime.”
“He had warned me that this day will come someday and for me to continue keeping a watch over you,” Defteros sighed.
“But I don’t want this to happen!” Albafica cried. “I don’t want to loose the only person I see as my father!”
Defteros gently pulled away Albafica from the tight embrace he had on the lifeless body of Rugonis. Albafica tried to resist.
“We should bring him home now, Albafica,” Defteros reassured Albafica.
“I’ll tell Sagittarius Sisyphos about this so he can help to arrange for a proper burial for Rugonis-sama. I’ll get him to tell Pope Sage too.”
“No!” Albafica cried. “I don’t want other people to get hurt too because of my action!”
“Then I’ll help you. Let us bring him home first, okay?” Defteros answered.
Albafica looked up at Defteros’ face. Although his face was mostly now hidden under the mask he was made to wear all the time to hide his identity from everyone in Sanctuary, Albafica can see the concern running all over it. He could see those tender eyes feeling for his sorrow, for Defteros was close to Master Rugonis too. Albafica nod and finally released his tight grip on Rugonis’ lifeless body.
Defteros carried Rugonis back to the cottage Rugonis shared with Albafica. As he walked behind Defteros, Albafica continued to sob.
That night, Defteros help Albafica bathe Rugonis and dress him in his favorite outfit. In the morning, just after the first ray of light emerged behind the hills, Defteros and Albafica buried Rugonis in the cottage’s garden, near his favorite spot. The morning was silent and no bird chipping was heard, that it felt like the world around the two of them were mourning with them too.
Albafica spent the next few days staying with Defteros at the Gemini Temple as he mourned the death of his Master. He cried himself to sleep at night and Defteros stayed with him all the time to try to comfort him. The warmth of Defteros body as he lay beside him at night reminded Albafica of the warmth of Rugonis’ body as the later cradle him to sleep whenever he had a nightmare or sick when he was young.
Then, on the fifth day, after being coax by Defteros, Albafica finally wore the Pisces Gold Cloth and presented himself to Pope Sage and the new Athena.
The new Pisces Gold Saint is ready to face the world.
And his name is Pisces Albafica.
