Last night at NORD, I realized exactly how much these kids mean to me. We really do lean on each other. I don't think I'd make it without them. And I don't talk about them enough here. So this entry is a dedication to the boys and girls of the New Orleans Recreational Department's Ty Tracy Theater.
- This is to Laura, who doesn't realize exactly how good she is and who can cheer you up by thinking of even worse things that could be happening.
- This is to Kevin, who plays the piano like a god and teeters on the fine line between sanity and insanity... which is why he's so damn fun to be around.
- This is to Lauren, who's probably smarter than most adults could ever hope to be and who will become the next Maureen Dowd.
- This is to Harold, who is never stingy with cheer-up hugs and who, as far as I know, has never been angry.
- This is to Alex, who is a confident, happy-go-lucky guy and has no regrets about putting on a chicken hat and a Gumby tie and racing around the Riverwalk in full view of tourists.
- This is to Jeremiah, because although he's usually just an annoying, little kid, he has his moments of hilarity, and he can play the drums like no ten-year-old should be able to.
- This is to Erica and Rebecca, who look up to me and can make me feel better just by smiling that innocent little smile that kids do when they know that someone older will make everything okay again.
- This is to Amalie, who hates being stuck in a body four years too young for her and makes up for it with a biting, psychotically intelligent kind of sarcasm that I envy.
- This is to Dwayne, my best friend, the sweetest guy on the face of the planet, and the most selfless person that I have ever met.
- This is to Colleen, my partner in fanfiction crime, the girl I sometimes consider my long-lost sister, who thinks up even crazier ideas than I do and isn't afraid to use them.
- This is to Damon, who always makes me laugh and feel special: "Damon, are you out of the closet yet?" "Nope!" "Sweetie, go find yourself a nice boy." "But I want you!"
- This is to Angela, AKA my sister-in-law, one of the most genuine people I've ever met, who can make me laugh by just smiling, pouting, giggling, or saying the word "ostrich."
- This is to Josh, AKA "The Ostrich", who doesn't let his good looks or his dancing ability go to his head and knows just when to act like a nutball and when to give out hugs and quote Casablanca.
- This is to Courtney, AKA my baby, who's been my fake girlfriend for a year, and who is psychotically talented and beautiful and shouldn't ever be made to feel differently.
- This is to Sarah, who wormed her way into my heart much faster than I thought she would, who says exactly what she thinks and always smiles, no matter what
- This is to Michael, AKA Hal Sparks, who puts up with all director jokes with a smile and a laugh, and who always manages to make me feel important when I feel otherwise.
There are others, a lot of others, but I consider these kids the core. These are the ones that I lean on and really, really care about.
So, this is to sticking through this godforsaken show with our friendships and our desire to do theater intact.
I love you kids more than you'll ever know.
