So Steve and I made it to Kentucky. The hotel we choose was a bit further away from Mammoth Caves than we realized, but that was ok. We did see a funny billboard on our drive up" When you die, where will you spend eternity?" and it was in the middle of a cow pasture so I'm wondering if it was directed at the cows or at me. There certainly were a ton religious signs and billboards and even a Jesus written on the roof of a barn. While Steve was on the internet last night, we came across an article on Fark.com that the first line of defense for Kentucky's Homeland Security is Almighty God. Seriously. Read it here.
http://www.kentucky.com/210/story/608229.html While it's really pretty out here, I can't wait to get home. While the roads in Kentucky are great, the drivers suck.
We took a 4 hour, 4 mile tour of the caves and it was nice and all, but there were 80 people on the tour and you all know how much I hate kids and loudness and people ruining my geologically romantic visit of the largest cave system of the world. *Shakeyfists* I've been to several other caves before so unfortunately this one fell short in comparison. The most spectacular features were in the last 5 mins of the tour. And as most of this cave is dry, there weren't those spectacular stalactites and stalagmites until the last 5 mins. Oh well. Another National Park and it has satisfied my curiosities. I certainly don't want to discourage anyone from going there. The place was epic, but if you have the chance, go see Diamond Caverns too if you're really wanting to see some spectacular formations.
After the cave tour, we drive back towards our hotel and visited 4 antique stores which were quite good, but we didn't buy anything. The BBQ restaurant we were planning to go to was closed so we ended up having some delicious Mexican food. I love me some pollo loco.
So the plan tomorrow is to get up, have some breakfast and hit the road back home. A short little trip.
