*wonders why everyone is in such a damn uproar about tomorrow/today* Yes, we find out who is going to be our next President. However, We The People do NOT directly determine who it is going to be.
We do not live in a true Democracy here, people. Our individual votes do not *****I repeat DO NOT***** elect our next president. What **we** will be doing tomorrow is called the popular vote. And that's precisely what it is - finding out which candidate the populace likes most. In many cases, our elected representatives in the Electoral College (our Senators and Representatives) do NOT have to vote the same way the popular vote in a given state does!
Look it up people. THEN be frightened. You're worried because you think we will determine the fate of our country for at least the next four years. I'm worried because we don't!
Are the electors in the College bound to vote for their candidates?
In some states they have a free vote but in practice they vote for the candidates they are pledged to. In other states they are required to do so. From time to time, individuals or small groups, called "faithless" electors, vote for another candidate but this has happened only rarely and no result has been changed by it. In 2000 an elector from the District of Columbia abstained.
If the result is extremely close, a "faithless" elector could cause real trouble. The issue would probably have to be decided by the courts.
Candidates can fail to get the most votes in the nationwide popular vote in a presidential election and still win that election. This occurred in 1876, 1888 and 2000.
Anyway... I'm just saying. Your anxiety is misplaced.
