Well folks, the results are in. Although I have been pretty quiet this election season, true to form I have an opinion on just about everything.
Word up y'all, give it up for deval. That was the refrain of an original pop song debuted at the Deval/Barack event last week. Although I occasionally find him a bit schoolmarmish in his 'that's not what we're about!' refrain, I couldn't be happier that he won. I am convinced it was all because of the sticker in my apartment window.
Seriously, I now see the light at the end of Mitt Romney's crappy little tunnel. His administration was a disaster, he cut funding to just about everything, wanted to reinstate the death penalty, and used his own constituents as a punchline as he prepared to hit the national stage. Mitt, don't go away mad, just go away.
I never would have voted for Kerry Healey because I thought she was fearmongering on immigration and was being 'tough' in all the wrong places. However, I was disappointed with how much sexism there still is in politics. She is a serious woman and a serious politician. In a man that's called 'gravitas', in a woman that's called being a bitch. How many male candidates are seriously criticized because they are ugly. First of all, she is not, and that is a cheap shot to take when you can't think of anything else bad to say about a woman. And it doesn't matter. Deval Patrick is short and has a whiny voice, but you didn't hear that sort of conversation in the public forum.
Christy Mihos concession speech was horrendous. Get your head out of the speech you overtanned millionare dope.
The green-rainbow party is the only one which consistently puts forward the best candidates. I voted for Jill Stein for secratary of state because I was so impressed with her campaign in the last gubernatorial election. Unfortunately, Galvin wiped the floor with her.
For those of you who were unsure, Ted Kennedy was not, in fact running unopposed, although his opponent failed to garner more votes than your above-average write-in opponent. Before you start with the chappaquidick jokes, allow me to preempt them with this: shut up. He is a great legislator and is often called the conscience of the senate. And I wuv him.
I know, I know, Massachusetts is SOOOO liberal, except...we're not. We had three ballot propositions. One would have allowed more liquor permits for convenience and grocery stores, one would have allowed inhome day care providers to unionize, and one would have allowed candidates to be listed on ballots under more than one party. All of them were defeated, and I would imagine that was because many people felt about all the questions the way I did about question 1: I understand the argument, but I just can't see a compelling reason to change. That is the essence of conservativism, if you ask me (I have also had it pointed out that it is very New England). Also, electing all Democrats to the federal legislature and having only 5 republicans in the state legislature is not progressive. It's VERY status quo around here. We might seem like crazy progressives, but at the end of the day we are vying for the title of 'land of steady habits'.
Which leads me to Connecticut. Don't be pissed, but I supported Lieberman. I like the idea of Ned Lamont being elected, of the good people of Connecticut sticking it to those legislators who are overly permissive about executive power. But I believe the reality of the situation on the ground in Connecticut (which is where all but 4 of my family members lives) would have been negatively affected if Richie VonI'veonlybeentownselectmeninGreenwich had been elected. Remember, Lamont rhymes with dilettante.
Now, Joe, play nice. We've traded our Nedrenaline for Joementum, so please don't make the dems lives miserable.
Oh, those crazy Dems! Back in control. Nancy Pelosi is FIERCE, and she's only going to get fiercer. Score one for Italian American women everywhere. Lincoln Chaffee's loss, and the loss of the Republicans in New Hampshire, spells the end of old-money moderate New England Republicanism. Olympia Snowe, you might want to switch parties now.
EDIT: Santorum a new one
I forgot how thrilled I am about Rick Santorum being out like trout. Ever since he said that Boston earned the sex abuse scandal because we support gay marriage he has been on my brown list. Actually, since before then.
And I love Eliot Spitzer! And I love Hillary Clinton! WHEEEEE!
