Legend of Korra

Can't believe how long it's been since I updated. I've been distracted by a lot of non-fandom things still going on, and spending a lot of time babbling about Mad Men on TWOP-no, not bashing Megan or JP’s teeth! There were times I was overdosing on her a bit and I don't think JP is that strong of an actress, especially relative to the rest of the ( Read more... )

Coming to this discussion very late.

Maybe what happened was that the writers bit off more than they could possibly chew in 12 episodes -- or wrote a larger story and then had to prune it down, with terrible results to the characterization.

The story premise was really interesting. I loved the way the world had developed in 70 years to the steampunk period. If you think of the period as roughly 1920s/1930s industrial -- then you can think of the original A:TLA as being roughly mid-19th century and marvel at how hugely the industrial revolution impacted our world as well as theirs.

I do think the biggest problem was the lack of development for Korra losing her bending powers. That's something Aang never had to deal with -- he lost the Avatar state, but not his bending. Since the bending came so easily to her and she relied on it so much, it could easily have filled multiple season for her to regain it. The gift of her powers was a huge cheat and I hated it more than the Aang/Katara kiss in the Airbender epilogue.

My feeling about Mako was that he preferred Asami as a girlfriend (at that point) because it was a less complicated relationship, and he was focused on his athletic career. It wasn't that she was pretty, or rich. It was that she less challenging as a personality, not one of his team mates, and definitely not someone his brother was sweet on.
