I can understand people both watching and wanting it to be cancelled--though I think sometimes they've stopped watching as well as hoping it's cancelled. They just still know about plot developments that bug them. Like in the show I'm referring to I haven't watched it for years. I've attempted to end the story to myself in my head. But occasionally I still get info on something that's happened that messes with that because it's related to stuff I followed when I watched.

But I can also understand somebody being in the weird position of watching the show like they always did because they just can't let go and so wishing the producers would help them out by just taking it away. I know it's not literally an addiction to something, but I can understand somebody feeling like they just have to know, or somebody being in the fandom where they can't avoid stuff.

Actually, I think it's another thing that interests me, the way that sometimes you can just stop watching the thing and continue to hold on to your own personal fanon, and other times that's impossible for whatever reason. Or sometimes it just takes a while to get out of the habit. Like I've watched shows for a while after I thought they got bad, not because I was punishing myself but because I was entertained by talking about what I thought was wrong. That's the funny thing about the incident I'm talking about here, actually, because like I said it seems like every time I've come across fan conversations about the show for years it's always been about how badly it had been screwed up. Like there was barely any emotional engagement with the characters and even when there was it was couched in terms of something the writers or actors did well that day.
