So last night we all got together to congratulate Diane Keaton for her life's work. Okay, people who actually know Diane Keaton did that, but I was there! The people speaking to her were Nancy Meyers (producer of a few of her films), Lisa Kudrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Steve Martin, Martin Short and Woody Allen. The best thing about the tribute is probably that Diane Keaton has really funny friends. I've seen Meryl Streep at things like this and she's completely adorable in real life. She ended her tribute by saying that Diane "never ever calls me" and then walked off all hurt/offended in the way only Meryl Streep can pull off.
Lisa Kudrow actually had a deposition that Diane Keaton gave to prove that she totally is Annie Hall. She said, "See, nobody's ever going to ask her to testify."
Steve Martin played the banjo--yay!
The two funniest were, unsurprisingly, Woody Allen and Martin Short. Woody Allen, having been asked to say nice things about her, said she was punctual and thrifty and had nice handwriting. She was also "always beautiful, but not in the traditional sense, by which [he] meant pleasing to the eye..." He said he always showed her all his stuff first because she had a strong faith in her own taste, as one could tell from looking at her clothes. He thought she dressed "like the woman who comes to take Blanche Dubois to the sanitarium."
Martin Short I think had my two favorite lines of the night. First he said this night was the most special of his life, right up there with the night backstage in Bea Arthur's dressing room when he became a man. We'd seen a clip from Mrs. Soffel, which DK was in with Mel Gibson. Everybody was talking about the first time they met or saw DK, often before they knew her. Martin Short said he was in a restaurant with his wife and DK and Mel Gibson were sitting at the next table, because they were in town shooting Mrs. Soffel. He was all excited, but didn't know them, so he could only lean over to eavesdrop on what they were saying. He said when he leaned over Diane was saying to Mel, "What are we going to do about all these Jews?"
Anyway, yes, very funny. And she spoke at the end and it was really nice. She sang a little "Seems Like Old Times" like in Annie Hall and then she got all choked up and cried.
Also, I figured I'd do this here
IMDB MEME
-Go to IMDB.com and look up 10 TV shows you like(d).
-Post three official IMDB "Plot Keywords" for these 10 picks.
-Have your friends guess the show names.
I suspect this meme might not be fair for a lot of people on my flist, because some of these shows might not have been exported outside the US. One show I wanted to pick didn't even have keywords! (It was Courageous Cat & Minute Mouse):-)
