so every year my family does a gift exchange. my mom, brother and me go over to my aunt's house and get pizza, exchange gifts among the cousins and ornaments among the adults, we hang out for a couple hours and go home. we do this every year, and we have been for as long as i remember. around the 22nd, time for the gift exchange!
so the shake down of the family involved in this is as follows (this is important later, promise): cathy is my aunt, eric is my uncle, and audrey and evan are my two cousins. they are not related to me by blood, but rather marriage. we hold the gift thing at their house each year.
barb is my aunt (moms sister), brian is my uncle, and katy and patrick are my cousins. they are related by blood, and me and my brother are closer to katy and patrick than audrey and evan.
but this year, the bauers (the ones related by marriage) decided to cancel the gift exchange and have everyone exchange ornaments instead... im pissed. and my brother is too. this is how it shook down:
Mulunkey: Cathy called barb and said "you know what now that the kids are older maybe we should just not do presents and we should all do ornament exchanges." Barb said "what the christ" and told Mom. Mom told me and I pointed out that I'm the oldest of us, I'm the only one out of college and on the career track, and I think that is the damn stupidest idea I had ever heard because what the hell am I supposed to do with an ornament, hang it on my crushing student loan debt? But it got stranger...
konstantine2386: oh yeah? stranger? no kidding...
Mulunkey: So I ask mom if cathy was just consistently beaten with a burlap sack full of apples at christmas, what the hell happened to her childhood. Mom said she didn't know but it was passed on to her children. Cathy asked audry and evan if they would rather have presents or a ski trip to michigan the week after christmas. Instantly and unanimously they voted, "no presents!"
Mulunkey: It's like they're not even human people
konstantine2386: so wait... they're cancelling all of their xmas?
Mulunkey: They have removed all of their xmas (and by proxy their part in the bauer/holland/sammis xmas)
Mulunkey: No presents between any of them, just skiing
Mulunkey: I would seriously like to know where cathy gets off recommending that we all start acting like grownups
ok, granted i put that in there mostly because my brother is funny when he's mad and confused... what the hell are they thinking? presents is even the thing, i dont care about that. but this is a tradition that's been going on between us for at least 18 years. and they up and decide to cancel it for all of us, make santa cry and go to michigan to strap on skis and look like fools. did they ever hear of keeping childish innocence... so instead my real cousins and us decided to do it ourselves and combine that with the cookie baking we do every year. traditions (the big part of xmas, hello jackasses) will stay strong.
but im still pissed.
