I just saw the first ep of the new season of skins. After the hot mess S3 and 4 were I was ready to throw in the towel and quit skins for good but I am so glad my curiosity got the better of me and I didnt because that was actually pretty darn good! I am already liking this year's cast way more than the last one. Look I liked Naomi, Emily, Katie, Thomas and Pandora. Sometimes I liked JJ too. But Freddie and Cook were awful. The writing was terrible. the focus on character became so self contained that the narration felt disjointed and myopic. Finally I hated the couples in that series and the ones I did like was dealt with horribly. I also never bought the friendships, and the one given most focus cook and freddie's was the one i was least interested in. there was little focus on the girl's friendships with each other, emily/naomi doesnt count since they are dating but I did like what we saw of their relationship.
It seems like the writers of skins somehow heard my complaints because this new episode was 100% great and I have no real complaints! Well except for one very weird scene involving frankie, a replica gun, and some random hot guy in a schoolboy uniform. IDK what that was about. The single character focus is still being done but much more organically without getting us so trapped into the character's heads we cant see anything else. The focus this time was on frankie a strange girl who has had a very miserable time in school so far due to bullying. Her struggle very interesting and heartbreaking to me as I also had my fair share of bullying back in highschool and middleschool. yes I too knew the indignity of getting mocked for what you wear and look like. unfun as it were. Frankie's emotions and actions first trying to be inconspicuous, failing, then trying to accept new friends into her life without compromising herself but ultimately getting jilted were all very familiar to me. At the end Frankie does succeed after many more harsh failures and its really amazing to watch. I love the glimpses we got of the other characters too. Minnie clearly has some self esteem issues, grace is wonderful and the two boys of note I saw seemed pretty funny, nice and generally laid back which makes them worlds apart from fred and cook and i couldnt have asked for more. I love the long haired one nick, why? cause I love long hair on guys. I know I am shallow, I have never denied it! Anyway, I am genuinely interested in this cast's stories for a change, although Liv didnt make much impression on me. I am glad for the increased POC in this year's cast. last time poor thomas was the only person of color, and no freddie didnt count even if he did look like he's from the andes.
If you were a fan of the first 2 series and are familiar with the trainwreck of the third and fourth series then you may be reluctant about starting this series but I highly recommend it! S5's opener is good and I implore my entire flist to give it a go. You dont even have to be familiar with skins to try it out cause its a new cast.
I am looking forward to the second episode and I hope the good keeps coming. With the writers of skins it can be a hit or miss since even with S4 being so awful, Katie's episode still blew my mind with awesome. I hope this isnt a fluke!
