'Smart' is hardly the word for it.
Yes, iconoclasm CAN be a very positive force. But, I Heart Huckabees pushes it to the point where a passive viewer might actually think the movie has theoretical substance. Aside from being completely full of itself, this movie desperately attempts to perplex with lavish ideas. And I don't think these ideas are just for entertainment purposes. One major problem is that there is no new material here; Bernard's "wisdom" that everything is the same, even if it's different, basically boils down to the time-honored theory that everything is connected to everything else. WOW-- there's an insight beyond belief!
Hardly an insight. And that's just one example. I could elaborate, if need be.
The movie is mildly amusing at certain points, but is highly conventional when you strip away the rhetoric and get down to basic ideas. Overall, it is not funny whatsoever because it tries too hard and falls on it's face.
And when you try too hard with nothing to back it up, that's a waste of my 2 hours, even if it is a fun comedy.
I feel like I'm writing a review for the school newspaper.
In any case, I guess we all have our preferences. I suppose I just prefer not to be bombarded with nonsense trying to be passed off as philisophical quintessence.
But I'm glad you enjoyed it.
