Namine had never met anyone so exciting before in her life. Marluxia wore brilliant colors like she'd never seen a man wear before, and smelled of flowers -- no wonder, with the herbs and salves and tinctures he peddled from door to door -- and which the farmwives bought in quantity, though they tittered behind their hand about him. Axel juggled fire and wove hoops of flame and light, and though the elders warned the village children away, still they drew near, lured by the brilliant display. And Larxene hiked her skirts up past her knees and rode her mule fast, fast as though it were a knight's fleet-footed battle-steed, so that her fair hair and her bright tasseled scarves flew in the wind, and laughing.

So when on a no-moon night Roxas dared her to go with him to their camp, to watch them dance around the fire, she agreed though she knew her mother would disapprove. She crept out of bed and met him in the herb-garden, and together they fled, giddy with daring, into the forest, to the circle of bright light next to the tinkers' painted wagon.

There was Marluxia, tending a strangely-smelling pot over the fire, but Axel and Larxene were nowhere to be seen. "No dancing," Roxas said with a tone of disappointment -- and then yelped, as did Namine, when a thin strong arm closed around them. Namine screamed and squirmed to face -- Axel, eyes cat-bright in the darkness.

Roxas had squirmed free and was telling Axel to let her go, but Axel just laughed and swung her around and said, "I'll not hurt her, little spy." He put Namine down, finally, breathless on her feet, and winked, and said, "But it was an adventure you came here in search of, was it not?"

"Yes," Roxas said, "but -- "

"Then who am I to disappoint you?" His smile was wild as the fire in his hands. "Besides, your lass here would like to ride fast with Larxene, don't you, my love? All the girls do," he said, and Namine could suddenly hear the hoofbeats of Larxene's mule approaching, the mule fast as the wind.

She said, "Yes," quickly, without giving the matter deep thought --

-- and then she was on muleback, in front of Larxene, held tight with laughter in her ear, and it was like flying through the dark forest, past tree and stone, with no moon in the sky and only the stars to guide them. They rode on -- and on and on -- and in her delight she waited some time before saying, "Please, I must be home before dawn."

Larxene said nothing, and made no sign of having heard.

After a time, growing more agitated, Namine turned her head to see Larxene's fierce falcon expression, and said again, "Please, when will you take me back?"

"Whoever said anything about taking you back, pretty pet?" Larxene asked, and tightened her hold on Namine's waist.
