ATTN: BOSTON AREA PEEPS

Volunteers, supplies sought for incoming refugees

September 5, 2005 BOSTON

--Looking for ways to help victims of Hurricane Katrina? Gov. Mitt Romney said Monday that volunteers and supplies are needed for the 2,500 refugees who are expected at Camp Edwards on Cape Cod. Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve food, babysit, even to care for pets. In addition, Romney hopes the business community will contribute food, radios, televisions, clothing, toiletries, and sporting goods. "The job that we're undertaking is far greater than our National Guard resources are able to handle alone," Romney said at a Statehouse news conference. Volunteers are being asked to provide their own transportation, and to devote at least five consecutive days to the effort. Romney called on corporations to donate snacks, electronics, clothing, shoes, and sporting goods. "We have large athletic fields right next to the housing facility, but we don't have balls and bats, soccer balls and so forth," he said. The refugees could arrive by Tuesday afternoon, although the governor expects it will be later in the week.

People who can volunteer should call 800-293-4031. Businesses are asked to call 508-820-2000
