I just finished watching the Bones episode called, "The Salt in the Wounds" and I gotta tell you, they looked at teen sex and our lack of sex ed/lack of teenage responsibility with a grace I never expected. And it didn't hit until the very end. The way Booth handled this 16 year old father of 4 (with 4 different girls)... I was impressed. As a woman, it reminded me of what a man really is. And not in that She-ra Man Hater way, but the balances, yin-yang way. Booth and this 16 year old, sitting in a diner talking about what it means to be a man (which is as varied a topic as what it takes to be a woman), I saw the line, the choice, the fork in the road that either brings a young boy into manhood as opposed to simply growing older while never growing up. We really do need a new myth for our youth. The young people of this country have no ritual to help them understand what it means to be a Man or a Woman. Even women with our menses, this society is so disassociated from its gritty connection to nature we ignore that lizard-like need to connect to the intangible in a tangible way. We need a new myth. We've needed one for a while.
