You never know when your financial situation will change.
In January, a state law was passed that employees in certain fields had to be hourly rather than salary. Erik's employment changed accordingly and I was worried that it would result in less money. Well, hourly meant getting time and half (or double time) for overtime worked and last month he made over $2,000 more than he made before the switch. There was no job change, raise, or other forseeable change. It just worked out.
Don't stress and try to enjoy your pregnancy. Many women leave work about 4 weeks before their due dates and it's a great time to enjoy your son and get last minute things done.
About your baby shower- you shouldnt eat cake or other sweets during pregnancy anyway! From your fainting story it seems like you have a great support system of people who love you and want to give you attention. If you realy want a celebratory party, invite your family and friends over after the baby is born for coffee, appetizers, and dessert. Make it a "meet the baby" party rather than a shower. The celebration will be even better when there's a cuddly little baby involved. And who knows, you may get a few presents. And also maybe someone is planning one. You have 6 weeks to go, showers are traditionally 2 weeks before the due date.
