Character Information Name: Kazumi Hagino Age: 16 Setting: For the most part, the setting Kazumi comes from is a standard modern day Earth. The story is more or less set exclusively in Japan. One of the big differences is that the Yakuza more or less are more widespread than normal. Where they hold control, the police tend to be rather lax (more or less, they're paid off, except for the rare few officers that take their jobs seriously).
Secondly, there are a few organizations that have technology that allow them to bring the dead back to life, as well as granting them superhuman abilities. They become known as “Enhanced”. All of them gain some form of enhanced strength, speed, and durability. They also tend to develop a signature power of sorts, things such as electro-kinesis or super-speed (yes, that means even faster than a normal enhanced speed). However, there is a tradeoff: They have to be put in a pod for a period of time to help them 'recharge', so to speak, every so often. If they don't, they will slowly lose their powers and weaken, before merely dying. Using any of their enhanced capabilities will make them require a session in the pod sooner.
The Enhancement procedure will only work on a rare specimens of women. The amount of men it works on is very miniscule in comparison, and it has the side effect of changing them into women by the end of the process. History: Kazumi’s life was anything but normal. Her mother died during childbirth, and she was… ‘kind of’ raised by her father Yoshito. Without her mother around, she attached herself to video games, manga, anime… things like that. Sure, becoming an otaku wasn’t entirely unusual… but, on the other hand, there was the fact that her father was the leader of a rather powerful group of Yakuza.
She was allowed to go to public school like any other child, but a few other students in her class happened to be agents of her clan; to ensure that nothing happened to the heir of the clan, of course. Her position as the daughter of the Hagino-gumi wasn’t entirely a well kept secret, making it rather difficult to socialize in her school environment outside of the people that were assigned to protect her.
Still, for her, life went on relatively normally for a good number of years. Until a certain pair of new members were assigned as her bodyguards: Ryou Kagami and Blitz; the latter being rather unimportant, actually but-
Regardless, it was around this time that a certain organization known only as the Syndicate began making its move on their territory. Though the Hagino-gumi had its share of shady dealings, it certainly had nothing on what the Syndicate had planned. The Syndicate’s first plan of action was to attempt a kidnapping of the daughter as she came home from school.
Ryou was able to repel their initial attempt, earning him the ire of top Syndicate agent “Kuro”; but that was only the beginning. In their next assault, the Syndicate’s new ‘weapon’ would be revealed. The headquarters of the Hagino-gumi came under attack a few days later, most of the forces intending to divert the defenses while a two person group came to kidnap Kazumi during the confusion. One of them was beyond human, exhibiting inhuman strength and dexterity. It was a miraculous thing that Ryou and the others were able to hold her off, until he could take Kazumi to safety.
One thing colored Kazumi’s perception during that fight with the strange woman known as “Una”: During the fight, she had attempted to tackle the assailant while the others had been knocked away, and Una actually apologized to the yakuza daughter before she knocked her out.
After they managed to escape, they eventually regrouped with the rest of the Hagino-gumi. Kazumi was convinced that they could bring Una to their side, though everybody else… hardly shared such blind enthusiasm. Kazumi’s father, Yoshito, decided to call in help from other the other yakuza.
The ‘war’ raged on for some time. The initial outpost the Syndicate had set up was found and destroyed. During the Hagino-gumi’s counter attack, ‘Una’ was found in some kind of maintenance pod. Ryou, remembering what Kazumi had insisted on, kidnapped the strange woman to bring back to their stronghold. Their first victory was not without casualties, though. A powerful senior member of the Hagino-gumi was killed during the assault, while Yoshito was assassinated by Kuro.
With Kazumi suddenly in charge of the Yakuza, she had little choice but to rely on others to help her… but there were no surviving senior members to provide council. She desperately went to a retired member known as Jack Mauss, easily swaying him to help them again. Not too long, after Una regained consciousness, Kazumi managed to convince her to join them. Apparently, the death of her immediate superior somehow freed her of that obligation. Una didn’t remember anything before she had been enhanced, and accepted Kazumi as her new master.
However, they soon found out the reason why they had found Una in such a vulnerable state to begin with was because her condition required ‘maintenance’ every so often to prevent her from ‘shutting down’. After some investigation on Jack’s part, they found a scientist who had been researching a similar project and were able to have him construct a maintenance pod for Una.
The Syndicate was not finished, however. They had other enhanced women to bring into the battle. Even one that Ryou would find familiar: His girlfriend, who he had thought dead. This program that the Syndicate used somehow could bring the deceased back to life. When faced with this opponent, Ryou was beaten to death. They had little choice but to have him undergo the enhancement procedure to try to save his life… and they soon found out why only women had been enhanced. When it was all said and done, Ryou came out as a female; much to his/her chagrin. It was miraculous that it had even worked on him/her at all.
From hiring the corrupt police to assist, to bringing in one of their senior members as an enhanced agent, the Syndicate found its plans foiled time and again. Ryou’s girlfriend was eventually brought to her senses, though a failsafe robbed her of the strength the program had granted her. The Syndicate was losing entirely too much money and personnel in the project, and soon shut down their attempts… though the Hagino-gumi would never forget what had been done to them. However, with the damage that had been done to them, it would be some time until they could attempt to bring retribution to the Syndicate.
Kazumi had grown rather close to Una during their time working together, though the relationship being awkward due to Una’s somewhat strange way of acting that came as a result of how the Syndicate brainwashed most of their enhanced agents. Only a few weeks in the aftermath of the war, a girl had shown up at the steps of the Hagino-gumi. It was Una's younger sister, who was able to identify Kazumi's new girlfriend by the name of Satoko. By now Kazumi had known her as Una for awhile, but she chose to make an effort to remember to call Satoko by her true name. Her code-name, after all, was given by their enemies.
Personality: Kazumi can be described somewhat as eccentric. Her upbringing has given her a somewhat distorted view of the world, given that she watches so much anime, manga, and games. Her mother was never around to raise her, and her father was almost always busy with Yakuza politics. For the most part, her main social interaction was with tough yakuza men. Granted, they had to be a bit softer around her since she was the daughter of their leader, but still…
Because of her hobby that she grew up on, Kazumi uses some words that more or less seem off for what she's talking about. She may make references to “hit points” or “affection points”, for example. Basically, she sometimes uses game terminology in normal conversations at times. That's not to say that she doesn't take things seriously, however. While she may use game terminology to describe a romantic situation, that doesn't mean she actually views it as just a game.
Despite all that, she does have a girlish side. It may come with the fact that she knows that she looks good. That’s not to say she’s full of herself, just that she’s aware of her physical appearance. She’s not shy of dressing up in cute cosplay outfits, either; or trying to dress up other girls. She’s not afraid of coming off as goofy or embarrassing herself. Usually.
She has something of an inferiority complex, however, given that she really isn’t that physically strong compared to the people she’s surrounded by. Kazumi has a strong desire to protect those close to her, but she is frustrated by the fact that she just doesn’t have the strength to fight in a real battle. If there’s even a chance that she can help somebody she cares about in a battle, she’ll take it. She just doesn’t want to stand by while her friends do all the fighting.
In spite of her outgoing nature, she is rather shy when it comes to matters of love. If she gets a crush on anybody, she’s likely to be unable to talk to them properly. This can be especially frustrating for her if the person in question (Satoko, for example) is rather slow in the matters of romance. Still, given enough time, Kazumi can and will get her point across somehow.
Once she finally does get past the shy stage, Kazumi can be very affectionate. For Satoko especially, she's actually willing to stop playing a video game just to spend time with her. This generally comes down to diabetes inducing glomping/snuggling or something of that nature, though she does know how to take people on proper dates, thanks to her dating sims... even if those probably aren't the best sources of dating advice.
Abilities: Video game playing, speed reading (manga), and genre savvy. She does have some training with a katana and martial arts, enough to take down a random thug, but otherwise she doesn't have any outstanding powers or abilities.
