Stealing, theft, misappropriation and borrowing without asking. It upsets me for a number of reasons. I've been very irritated recently, and for some very specific reasons--mainly the ones I just mentioned. Someone, and I have good suspicions about who, has decided it would be fun to take things that belong to me. I put a lock on my door to ( Read more... )

Oh yeah, they've heard about it... siscriobhann September 14 2012, 03:57:20 UTC
I live at a friends house. Her parents left the state and couldn't sell their house before they left so their daughter lives in the house and rents out the rooms. Aside from said friend and myself there are two others who live there--one of which I get along with and the other passive aggressive prick who used to be a friend (and hasn't figured it out yet that we aren't any more). He's the one who refused not to use homophobic language around me. I think I've posted about him before. Anyway, he's the one I suspect of taking my stuff. Any time he gets pissed he does something to get back at the person. So far I've had the most stuff knowingly go missing to the extent that I have a running list on the board down stairs.

My friend thinks I'm being a bit accusatory and wants to help me look for stuff in my room. She thinks we may find some of it in the mess. I've told her that I've looked through the mess and the stuff isn't there.

The asshat on the other hand has "found new chopsticks" to replace the ones that went missing (out of the coldness of his heart). He's also quick to bring up that I'm not the only one who's had stuff go missing. He say's that he's lost stuff but is pretty sure it's lost in his room out of his own carelessness. Not that he can name one thing that's gone missing of his, unlike everyone else in the house that has had at least one thing go missing (a flash drive, $600+, a watch, etc.).

Did I mention that somehow I got a punctured tire when I tried to back out of the garage when the floor had previously been spotless? And that after I had the tire repaired he asked if the folks who repaired it were able to tell how it happened? And the screw was in my tire in the dead center of the tire and on an angle as though it had been leaned up against my tire?

I don't trust the fucker any farther than I could throw his own car.

Yeah that's super sketchy. Is there any way this guy can be asked to move out?

Not at the moment. No evidence just circumstantial theorizing. And as it is it'd probably take a restraining order to make him leave.

:( Is he on a lease? That's the only other thing I could think that could help.

Anyway I hope things get better!

I don't know. I know I'm not. My landlady never had me sign any sort of contract or roommate agreement so I have to assume he hasn't had to either.

Still, without any evidence it just doesn't make sense to kick someone out and loose $600 +/- a month. Frustrating, yes. Perhaps I'm naive and would feel bad if someone got kicked out without any evidence...it wouldn't bring my stuff back. I want hard cold evidence, but I'm not about to demand to see his room just to get it. Kinda chicken that way.

The whole situation sucks... I wish there was a way to get around it. But if multiple things have gone missing there's clearly something going on. And if whatever it is isn't addressed, it's true that your things won't be returned but it also means that more things will likely be stolen that also won't be returned.

If people are claiming maybe they're just in a mess in a room then perhaps you guys should all take a day to do a super thorough cleaning of the house and your rooms. Then he can't claim it's that. If things keep going missing then it puts more credence on your theory.

Also, if you have anything go missing that would have something like a make/model/serial number on it I would recommend reporting the theft (or possibly 'mysterious disappearance') to the police department. There's an international database that police reports can tie into depending on the department's program and some departments also tie into things like the local pawn shops, which means if your item is pawned in your area or recovered in another state it might be able to be returned to you and they might be able to get some leads on who is involved. Who knows, maybe it really ISN'T that guy and it's some guest who's coming over. But that could potentially help lead toward those things.

It all depends on the department, though.

[ETA] Actually I meant to say national database but I'm not sure, it might have international functions too depending on the department.
