It has been unbearably hot out lately. We’ve been cranking the air conditioning inside, but every time I go outside it’s like hell. In case you’ve never been to New York City in the summer, let me tell you outright: lots of people do not wear deodorant. And I had to travel on a cross town bus today for a meeting. Squeezed between two people who sweat a lot more than you’d think for people of their size. There’s only so much your travel-sized perfume can cover up in ways of body odor.
And you’d think taking the subway back would be smarter. Heat rises, and the subway is underground. This makes sense. But you would be wrong. The subway just condenses the stench until you can’t breathe. Nothing smells worse than the underground in the summer.
Kids have taken apart the fire hydrants to the point where I have to step through giant flood puddles to get places. Which I don’t really mind, because they’re just as hot as the rest of us. But I wonder how safe that really is. You know its hot when a pedestrian gets sprayed by water from a cab tire and they look relieved.
I never thought I’d miss the rain in Ireland. But I do.
