"What is family? They were the people who claimed you. In good, in bad, in parts or in whole, they were the ones who showed up, who stayed in there, regardless. It wasn't just about blood relations or shared chromosomes, but something wider, bigger. We had many families over time. Our family of origin, the family we created, as well as the groups you moved through while all of this was happening: friends, lovers, sometimes even strangers."
-Sarah Dessen
This is my family:
Maeve Rourke. My mother, and according to my father the person I am most like. I apparently look like her, and there are things I do that remind him of her. I know next to nothing about her. She could have been the best mother in the world, or the worst. She could have been exceedingly ordinary. I never knew.
Tom Cassidy. My uncle. My only family for the first part of my life. As far as I’m concerned, the reason I am who I am today. The lessons he taught me will always be with me. And he taught me more about sacrifice than anyone I know. All my life he told me you look out for yourself. And the last thing he did was sacrifice himself for me. I will never forget that.
Sean Cassidy. My father. The reason I believe in second chances. The man I love the most and hate more than anyone else in my family. He taught me you don’t have to be perfect to love someone. It’s okay to make mistakes. And that sometimes hot cocoa makes everything better.
Lorna Dane. My big sister. The one who saw something in me, brought out the best in me. Who was patient through my temper tantrums, and my need to rebel and be told that it’s all okay. Who gave approval when I was desperately seeking it.
John Allerdyce. My brother. My protector. We bring out the best in each other, or at least he does for me. We’ve been through so much, and we’ve grown stronger and closer because of it.
Jean-Paul. I was so innocent before I met him. He brought me out of my shell, and that’s a good thing.
Tabby. She keep me smiling. I need that. Life’s too short not to smile.
Doug. He taught me that milkshakes can fix any hurt just as well as a band-aid and a kiss.
Sally. She taught me that it’s okay to lean on your friends when you need them. And that in every musical you can find a song meant for you.
Jeanne-Marie. There is always time for a kind word and a hug.
Aurora. Even when it's difficult, you have to be strong.
Ste. He taught me that family and loyalty can mean everything. Happy Birthday, Ste.
And of course Isaac. Isaac teaches me new things everyday. He is… indescribable. That’s the only thing I can think of.
