It was times like these, when Theresa was at work, doing conference call after conference call, meetings in-between, that she just wanted an office of her own that she could lock the door to and have a good cry. She had known getting into this that trying to run an organization at her age was a near impossible task. But she liked near impossible. She liked the challenge. And so far she’d done quite well. And once this particular rush was over, she’d go back to feeling that way. That was the good thing about these crazy spots. They left as fast as they came.
Theresa hoped this would be one such case. The swine flu that people were so worried about was affecting everyone. Now people were rushing to hospitals, especially people in New York City, where infections were running high. Now mutants were seeing how many hospitals would not accept them. And so they were flocking to the Cassidy Mutant Health Center. And Theresa and her staff did their best for redirection, point people to the right places. It was not equipped yet to be a full serving health facility. They were in the development stages, but nowhere near fully functional and operational. But now they didn’t have time to do so. If the swine flu was to reach a full pandemic, hospitals would be swamped, and even if they were friendly to mutants, they might not be able to provide care.
So Theresa doubled her hours, always on the phone, always on the move. What did it take to get this place functional as a care facility, and how soon could they do it? Endless budget meetings, which came along with it searches for donations, grants, and other income. Her father’s money could only take them so far. Her staff did everything she asked of them and more. God, if only she could pay them more.
Everyone needed care, treatment, and all people, mutant or not, would need to seek alternative care facilities besides hospitals. She was determined to make the Cassidy Mutant Health Center a safe haven for any mutants with this or any other infection.
If she had to be entirely honest with herself, Theresa didn’t think she could pull it off. It was too much too soon and they just weren’t ready. But it didn’t matter what she thought. She had to.
