Chapter 6 - Alien Attack?

Despite this being a law enforcement conference with experienced officers and agents, things quickly descended into chaos. People were shouting and getting out of their seats, even though all it had been was a loud noise, a bit of smoke, and a banner. The banner was even written in English, making it easy to read.

Peter got out of his seat, easily getting past the people in his row since they weren’t panicking, and fought his way to the front of the room. He bounded up the stairs to the stage and took the microphone from the lecturer.

“Calm down, everyone. This is not an attack, simply a message,” Peter said.

“Is it aliens?” Someone called out from the crowd.

“What?” Peter blinked. “No, it’s not aliens.”

“The aliens have chosen us to be probed!” someone else called out.

“I don’t want to be probed,” another person wailed.

Neal came up from behind Peter and took the microphone. “If you are worried about aliens or are just panicked in general, make your way calmly to the cafeteria and see if there is any hot chocolate. Do not drink the coffee, I repeat, do not drink the coffee.”

People started freaking out about the coffee being contaminated, but the auditorium did empty out. The only people left were either asleep or sitting in the back row.

“What was that?” Peter asked as he took the microphone from Neal and put it back on the podium.

“Do you really want them drinking coffee?” Neal asked. “Besides, there will be more for us that way.”

“If they don’t pour it down the drain,” Peter pointed out.

“Oh, I didn’t think of that.” Neal blinked in slight worry.

“Why did you send them away?” Peter asked.

“They weren’t useful when they were panicking,” Neal answered. “And all of the competent people stayed behind.”

“Ignoring those people,” the blond who Neal had been speaking to said as she hopped up on the stage. “Do you think that they’re dead?”

“They’re just sleeping,” one of her teammates replied.

The four teams from the back row started coming up to the stage. Jones and Diana signaled Peter before waking up the sleeping agents and escorting them out of the room. Peter hopped that they were heading to the cafeteria to learn what anyone had seen instead of flaking off like the rest of the world seemed to be doing.

“I would have expected law enforcement agents to be more steadfast,” Neal commented right on time.

“Who’s the Kaitou Kid, honey?” Elizabeth asked before Peter could say anything in reply.

“He’s a jewel thief after the mythical Pandora,” Peter said.

“He’s a phantom thief who always returns his targets,” Kuroba said a second later.

“You were assigned to guard the Blue Court Diamond, but your teammate doesn’t know about the Kaitou Kid?” Hakuba asked.

“She’s my wife. She’s wonderful, but only here for us to get in,” Peter defended.

“Elizabeth Burke, nice to meet you,” Elizabeth introduced.

“It looks like a simple Kid trick, harmless, but it means that he was able to enter the building undetected,” Hakuba said.

“You said that you looked over the security?” the second brunet teen - who almost looked like Kuroba - asked.

“The security is already bad,” Neal commented.

“We’ll have to check it over anyway,” Hakuba decided.

“We should split up,” the blond hair leader of the ATF team said. “We’ll go interview the people in the cafeteria, see if they actually noticed anything useful and you can go and check on this jewel.”

“Fine,” Peter nodded in agreement. The four teams split up, ten going to the cafeteria and ten going to see the display room.

“You do know that the Blue Court Diamond isn’t there yet,” Neal said as Parker and Eliot joined the group destined for the display room.

“Where is it, then?” Parker asked.

“I’m not going to answer anything different from the other times you’ve asked me,” Neal said. “It’s safe.”

“What kind of safe? How hard is it to crack?” Parker questioned.

“I’m not answering that,” Neal replied.

“How fun is it to crack?” Parker asked.

“I’m sure that you would have fun trying to crack it,” Neal said after considering the thief for a moment. “But I’m not going to tell you where it is.”

“Oh, come on, Neal, I just want to see it,” Parker said. “It’s not like I’m going to steal it or anything, not like I did with those other jewels.”

Eliot scoffed. “You can’t not steal, Parker.”

“Okay, so I would steal it, but I would give it back,” Parker admitted. “I did that with the Hope Diamond, you know.”

“I know, but Peter’s already got to deal with one thief after the Blue Court Diamond, he doesn’t need another,” Neal said. “He’s upset at me enough for even having it, let alone if I let someone steal it before I could deliver it.”

“Yeah, what’s up with this job of yours, anyway?” Parker asked. “You’re helping the guy who caught you.”

“I let him catch me, and you’re working with the guy who almost caught you,” Neal said.

“We’ve corrupted him,” Parker said.

“And he’s corrupted us,” Eliot added.

“I’ve loosened Peter up, but I can’t corrupt him without Elizabeth’s permission,” Neal said as Elizabeth dropped back from her husband’s side to join the three.

“Hey, you two have got a good thing going for you right now,” Elizabeth replied.

“This is Eliot and Parker, guys, this is Elizabeth,” Neal introduced. “These two used to be my teammates in my Genin days.”

“You better not let Peter hear that just yet. He’s still in denial and is more likely to suspect them of being criminals and arrest them,” Elizabeth warned.

“That wouldn’t be too outlandish,” Neal replied.

“He doesn’t need anything more to use against my sister.” Elizabeth sighed. “I’ll go reassure him that you’re not up to anything.”

Elizabeth left them and caught up to Peter, but Kaito Kuroba joined them a second later. “So, I hear you’ve taken on my M.O.?” he asked Parker.

“You mean that you're?” Parker exclaimed before Eliot clapped his hand over her mouth.

Neal waved off the curious looks that they were getting and switched over to talking in Japanese so that no one beyond the teens, who Neal already figured knew of their companion’s identity, could listen in. “Only when she’s bored.”

“Oh, I don’t mind,” Kuroba slipped back into his native language easily. “In fact, hearing the rumor was what made me look into America for the jewel.”

“Hey, if you want me to take care of those guys after you, I can,” Eliot said over Parker’s mumbled reply of ‘not copying off of a kid.”

“Do you know who they are?” Kuroba asked.

“The Black Organization is one of the worst of the worst; it’d be a pleasure,” Eliot replied.

“I was surprised to find that the jewel was moved and that so many security features were put into place,” Kuroba said, turning to Neal.

“I have no idea why it was moved, but Peter doesn’t want it here,” Neal answered.

“Oh?” Kuroba asked.

“It’s funny how he refuses to believe that El was a con woman and that I’m a ninja, but he knows all about the jewel and doesn’t think that it’s odd,” Neal commented.

“Forget about that,” Parker interrupted. “Can I steal it first?”
