From what I understand, they did want to hack off Tyrion's nose but it would have been too expensive to continually green-screen it -- that's why they included that line of Cersei's, "I heard you'd lost your nose, but it doesn't look as gruesome as all that." Big battles are expensive to produce as well, which is probably why we didn't get to see the Battle of the Fist.

(It's always money, in the end.)

I do agree with kyootulu about the Barristan reveal; I was annoyed at first but then it was like 'no that makes sense' and how could I not love such a triumphant return of one of my favourites?? I expect more hardcore bookies will be foaming, though.

I didn't actually mind how talky it was either, come to that. They've got to pace themselves a lot better now that they aren't doing one season:one book, anyway.

My biggest actual gripes were 'how they handled Mance's party,' 'Qyburn not being a Bloody Mummer' (though I'm willing to withhold judgment until I see more), and the really weird costume design in Astapor. Why couldn't they have just gone with the tokar? It's just the bastard child of a Roman toga and a sari!!

tl;dr it was okay but I'm more optimistic about the rest of the season.
