All in all, kiiinda mediocre as a season opener, in my opinion.
I may just still be grumpy gus over the fact that they didn't film the Battle at the Fist, but I had anticipated that they left out of season 2 so they could open Season 3 with it and I'm disappointed this wasn't the case. I think it would've provided the necessary punch and grandosity fitting of a season premier, but instead we got a more subdued, talky episode.
Which, you know, isn't a /bad/ thing. It would've been a fine episode in any other part of the season but it's not how you kick things off with a show like this, I think.
I don't know. Game of Thrones has always done the intrigue/political machinations part extremely well, but the Achilles heel of the show-like Rome before it-has always been it's ability to portray the battles everyone who knows what's going on is looking forward. Certainly a lot of important battles happen off-screen in the book, but there are also many that don't.
Also, Tyrion hardly looks as messed up by his injuries as the books suggested, but I guess that's for the same reason Daenarys didn't get her hair burned off at the end of season 1. Overall I'm looking forward to the rest of the season-especially with the return of Barristan Selmy-but I do think they had misstep here. Fortunately they've got the rest of the season to recover from it.
