“Art is Non-Binary”
A male artist friend of mine recently posted on Facebook the assertion that “Art is non-binary.” The on-line discussion was cordial and interesting but the phrase inspired me to consider the gender associations in various languages. In Italian Arte is feminine. In French, l’Art is masculine. What’s up with that? You’d think that languages as similar as French and Italian could agree on genders for nouns. Arte is feminine in Portugal but masculine in Spain. English resolves the dilemma by assigning no gender to art.We English speakers are so “woke.”
