Subtle Machinations

May 10, 2009 00:35

As I sit here, vaccines for hepatitis A and tetanus are working their way through my body (and congealing on my left thumb, which I stupidly cut while working on Gold Dredge 8's audio system earlier today. Another corner off my Totin' Chip), and a background check is being run by people I don't know, checking to see if I have problems with substance abuse, anger management, or any of a variety of socially unacceptable behaviors. Later they will check to see if I have a current passport.

Over the next few days, my employers and professors will receive phone calls. When they pick up the phone, they will all be asked the same question: Why should Tom Hewitt go to Iraq?

For those who haven't heard, I've applied for a three-week embedded-journalist program through UAF. If I am selected, I will go to Forward Operations Base Warhorse near Ba'qubah and embed with the 172nd Stryker Brigade. So far, the applicants have been winnowed to five and I'm still on the list. Three of us will be chosen for the embed, and the other two will serve as alternates.

I'll know in a couple of weeks where I'll be in August.
