Facebook seems to more suited to the "drive-by" comment. Sort of the conversation you have with someone that amounts to "Hi! how are going? I'm heading over to XX, so we need to plan a get-together some time..."

I find LJ to be more suited to the equivalent of an extended conversation between 2 or more interesting people.
