Take a second and try to imagine that you've never seen any movies or TV shows.
Ask yourself...How would my life be different? How would my outlook on life be different?
I know it's impossible to really do that, but if you take away the movies, all you have left is real life. If all you had was real life, I would imagine that you would learn to enjoy it for what it truly is. Your family, friends, etc. Along with that is the hardship of life.
I am a new father. I'm discovering that one of my tasks as a father is to teach and train my sons that life is not easy, it's hard. You have to work, study, wait in line, do chores, get along with people you don't like, deal with boredom ...on and on. The movies and TV shows we've watched our whole life, for the most part, have skewed and distorted the reality of life; leading us to subconsciously believe that we deserve fun, pleasure, happiness and a happy ending. So by comparison, real life pretty much stinks!
Isn't it interesting that teenagers in the USA are committing suicide by the thousands, but if you look at the third world countries, where there is famine and starvation. They don't kill themselves. They don't know life any differently! Life stinks for them, but they don't realize it stinks because they have never seen anyone living any differently. There is no discontentment, because that is all they know.
This is one of the hidden dangers of the entertainment we consume. It affects our entire outlook and philosophy about how life "should" be! Real life is all there truly is. Movies are fantasy about a reality that doesn't exist. You say, "I know that!", but we must stop filling ourselves with fantasy and pleasure and realize that there is an enemy that would have you discontent in all things. Learn to take pleasure in real life along with it's hardships, because that's the real thing.
