Angel: “Liam, don't go astray,
you've got to be just who you are
Who you are
And I feel safe, so safe
And I feel safe, so safe
And I feel safe, so safe, so safe” (Safe - Travis)

Today was the day. It was nearly full moon. Liam could smell it. The four men headed downstairs to the room of transformation, just as they had every month since Shadow first appeared.
Angel had told Liam that he couldn’t have made it through all this without him. He was here for Angel, here to be with him during his transformation.
Of course Liam didn’t need to come to the room of transformation for S’more to appear. He let S’more out quite often now, but never when Angel was around. Liam was one for the dramatic. S’more must still be something new and exciting when Shadow first met him. Tonight S’more and Shadow would see each other for the first time.
Liam didn’t want Angel to see S’more as ordinary or always around, yet Liam had to get used to S’more. S’more had to become familiar to Liam, become an integral part of him. And he had to learn to control S’more just as he had controlled himself these many years. No one could know, not even Angel.
The words of the Gwydions followed him everywhere. “A little more caution from you Liam. You are too young to understand. Until you do, tell no one. You do not comprehend who you are and what follows you here.”
Liam had been careful. He hadn’t told a soul. Yet he was sure Sirius knew.
Liam practiced his control on S’more for hours at a time. He mustn’t slip up. Now was the ultimate test.
Ever since Angel was bitten, Liam knew they would run together. It could have been sooner if he hadn’t been afraid. He was such a stupid prat. Why was he so afraid of the unknown? Why had he been afraid of S’more?
But there was no time to think about any of that now. He was so happy. He wanted to scream it to the world. He would be running with Angel.
Liam peered into the cold, dark and dank room. It was still devoid of furniture. The sheepskin rug still covered the center area.
As he crossed the threshold, he knew nothing would ever be the same. He was no longer delegated to the shadows. He was no longer an outsider looking in. He was a part of everything.
His thoughts were on Angel. The last transformation had been so difficult for him. There had to be a way to make this one easier.
Once Liam was sure everything looked safe, he stepped aside to allow the others to enter. He was tense. Sure he was antsy about S’more’s first meeting with Shadow, but that was not his main concern. Every month at this time he was drawn even more strongly to Angel. It was hard enough sitting on the stoop watching Shadow, but what about tonight? He needed to keep himself in check.
And ‘dear’ Angel was no help. As he walked by, Angel brushed against him, causing Liam to shiver. Angel kissed Liam behind the ear and growled teasingly.
Sirius stared soberly. “Go get ready Angel. Time’s short.”
Angel winked at Liam and twirled around. He began unbuttoning his shirt as he strutted towards Lupin.
Liam stood gaping at Angel. Everything within him was racing. This wasn’t good. He looked down at the floor and squeezed his eyes shut trying to force his body to behave. He took a slow deep breath. He could do this. He just had to concentrate.
Sirius punched him on the shoulder. “Come on little brother.” He put his hand on the back of Liam’s neck and led him to where Remus and Angel were disrobing.
Liam didn’t open his eyes. He stood next to Angel with his hands out, ready to take Angels clothes and fold them.
Angel was sniggering. His shirt nearly sailed through the air and landed on Liam’s head. Liam yanked it off and held it in his arms. This wasn’t funny. Angel deserved to be pummeled, but not now. He clenched his jaw, calmed himself, opened his eyes and looked directly at Angel. He snatched Angels other clothes and hurried to the corner, where he folded them neatly and placed them next to Remus’.
Sirius stood beside him and began undressing. “Listen Liam, I know what Angel is doing.”
Liam held his arms out to take Sirius’ clothes as usual.
“No Liam, tonight I take care of you.” He helped Liam out of his shirt. “You just take care of Angel.”
“I know you understand the danger Angel presents to you tonight.” He folded both their clothes and laid them in the corner.
Sirius continued, “It is up to you to make sure it doesn’t happen. Angel will be in the throws of being a wolf. You must keep him safe. He would be devastated if anything happened to you because of him. Do you understand?”
Liam nodded.
“Through the years, I have watched over Remus. It has always been natural for me to do that. This is the reason I became Padfoot. I would be lost if I couldn’t take care of him. He knows that and it comforts him a little.”
“I will be at your side if you need me.”
He winked. “You just have fun.”
“Ready?”
A moment later an African Painted dog and a large black dog stood where Liam and Sirius had been. S’more inched toward Angel, who was sitting on the rug with Remus. Padfoot stepped in front of him, his tail wagging, inviting him to play.
Angel watched from his place on the rug. His thoughts were becoming fuzzy. The moon pulled at him. His anger simmered just below the surface. No matter how many times he went through this he couldn’t accept the lack of control. Sure Shadow and S’more may have fun tonight, but that didn’t help. He wanted to be the one who chose when he would be Angel and when he would be Shadow. He didn’t want some stupid bite deciding for him. He hated this.
“Angel, I am here.” Remus’ voice soothed him a bit.
Angel was still angry, but he felt like a whiner having a pity party. He had no right to feel sorry for himself. Remus had gone through this for years, ever since he was a very small boy.
But there was no time to feel ashamed. It had started. The familiar buzzing sound screamed through his head as white light shot across his eyes. He was totally engrossed in what was happening to him, no longer aware of the outside world. He kept repeating Liam’s name in his head, inwardly screaming.
S’more knew Angel was begging for him. He lay down on the dirt floor and whimpered.
Angel no longer struggled to keep the wolf inside. He hadn’t done that since his first transformation. Yet even though he allowed the wolf to take him over, it didn’t keep the pain away. He writhed in anguish. Everything inside him was shifting. Bones were elongating, reforming. Muscles were stretching.
Then it was over. Shadow stood and shook himself. He felt strong and confident….and he wanted to see that new companion of his. But Moony stood blocking his path to S’more.
Padfoot ran in a circle around S’more and barked. It was time….the great outdoors was calling….let the fun begin.
You didn’t have to tell S’more twice. He immediately ran out the door, up the steps, across the hall, through the opening behind the tapestry and outside. What a beautiful night. The wind against his face felt wonderful. He turned around. Where was everyone? He wished they would hurry.
Then it happened. He knew he was being watched. Not only did his neck prickle. Every nerve in his body told him there was someone else here. Yet there was no scent to follow and even in this bright full moonlight, there was no shadow. He ran back towards the tapestry and growled. No way was he going to let Shadow out here until he was sure it was safe.
Padfoot understood and blocked Shadow’s path. When Shadow tried to run around Padfoot, Moony growled. Shadow stopped in his tracks and whined. He wouldn’t disobey Moony, but he could protest.
S’more turned and ran across the lawn and into the surrounding woods. Finding nothing there, he ran the perimeter of the lawn, checking every nook and cranny. He was flustered. Nothing was there. He knew that wasn’t right. The feeling of being watched remained.
But he couldn’t hold up the romp any longer….He ran full throttle at Shadow and barreled him over, turned and dashed back towards the woods.
Shadow wasn’t going to take this lightly. S’more was going to pay. He jumped to his feet and sprinted after him, Moony and Padfoot watching from a distance.
Shadow approached the woods. There was S’more, running back and forth inviting Shadow to come and play. Shadow bounded forward to join him.
The night was spent in pure enjoyment. They followed streams, raced each other, chased whatever came along, stopping only when they were thirsty. Once their thirsts were quenched, they took off again.
Shadow was surprised at just how good a tracker S’more was. He soon learned that the lawn was covered with small caves and holes where all sorts of animals burrowed. He hadn’t found many on his few treks outside, but that was probably due to lack of focus. S’more, on the other hand, continually found new critters.
They played for hours on end. Finally, Shadow stretched out on the ground. He’d had enough of looking at animals. He needed something to chase.
S’more must have read his mind. A moment later he ran towards Shadow, jumped over him and bounded across the lawn.
Shadow took off after him. What a wonderful feeling. Chasing S’more was much better than running with him. His whole attention was on that one thing…catching S’more. But he was still a few yards behind.
Then it happened. His big chance. S’more tripped over hidden tree root and landed flat on the ground. By that time Shadow was running full force, bounding towards S’more. He turned in midair barely missing S’more but ending in a thorn bush.
Damn it hurt. He tried to move his legs, but the bush wouldn’t let go. He was stuck. He wanted out…now! He continued to thrash forward and backwards. Yet the more he struggled, the more entwined he became.
S’more jumped up and started biting at the branches, blood coming from his mouth. He desisted only when Padfoot hurdled into him and knocked him away from the plant. Padfoot had hit him so hard, he was winded.
Moony growled loudly and got everyone’s attention. He looked directly at the blue-black wolf struggling among the vines. Shadow became still. Moony rounded the bush several times, finally stopping next to a large branch. Padfoot walked to his side and took hold of the limb. Moony walked around and held onto another. Together they pulled, lessening the plant’s hold. Shadow was still wedged in, yet there was just enough give that he could squeeze out.
As soon as he was free, Shadow licked his paws, readying himself for more adventure. Yet the time had come. Dawn was about to break. Night was over.
In all the excitement everyone had lost track of time. They had been outside too long and would not make it back to the room in time. Moony lay down on the soft lawn and Shadow lay beside him. Padfoot and S’more lay next to them. S’more licked Shadow’s fur, waiting for Angel to return. Shadow writhed in pain for just a moment before Angel fell fast asleep. Remus was sound asleep as well, exhausted after the night’s events.
Sirius got to his feet and walked into the house, returning with two warm blankets. Remus and Angel were lovingly wrapped up and carried into the house. Sirius carried Remus into their room and laid him in bed.
Liam set Angel gently on their mattress and tucked him in. He thought he had never seen anyone so beautiful. The morning colours that shone on Angel’s face and Angel’s loud snores brought a lump to Liam’s throat. How did he get so lucky? He sure hadn’t done anything to deserve this.
He slid under the sheet and lay beside Angel. At this moment he felt complete. He needed nothing else.
