The rented jacket cost Vernon a bit. Impression was everything.
It fit a bit snug.
“Petunia dear…. I have moved ahead in my job… can provide you with a respectable home in a respectable neighborhood; no riffraff around. Whatcha say?”
He held out the family ring. Petunia was very lucky to get him; having a sister like that, and her parents… well.
Petunia smiled through pursed lips. Vernon had been a rebound from a schoolgirl’s unrequited love. But he did like her and she had no reason to hope anymore.
With those two words I will , her life sentence began.
