Toy Story-ish

Curses! Foiled again! I didn’t get to go to the Tara McPherson signing at KidrobotLA (http://www.kidrobot.com/content.cfm?section=TaraLA) this past Thursday, so I just ordered Ace and Ion through Rotofugi. They arrived in the mail today! A nice way to end the weekend / begin the week! ^_^

To recap:
On Friday, Dingbat and I went to the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. I bought the new Swindle and Giant Robot mags, as well as a book: Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar…Understanding Philosophy through Jokes by Thomas Cathcart & Daniel Klein. It looked silly and seemed somewhat relevant to my critical theory class (or so I justified the purchase). After walking around for a bit, we watched Blades of Glory, which was funny/good but not as good as Talladega Nights. Next up, I really want to see The Hoax (that Richard Gere movie): “writing = bullshitting your way out of a situation”…what’s not to love?

On Saturday I went to Disneyland with Dingbat, Walter, and Vanessa. Much fun was had, several silly pictures were taken, and for once I didn’t end up with a massive headache at the end of the day. Diana has the pictures up on her lj, so I’m not going to post them here (1.I’m lazy 2.I don’t know how 3.The only people who actually care have probably already seen them). My new, perfectly spherical, “perfect circle” Pooh is up on the shelf next to Gloomy and he looks worried. I’m guessing the uber-cute, perfectly spherical stuffed toys are part of a new Disney toy line? Maybe I’ll post a picture later, so as to better illustrate the “essence” of the new Pooh. By the way, what the hell is a “Pooh” anyway? A type of bear…? If so, isn’t that kind of redundant? “Winnie the Bear, Bear.”

So, I’m slowly becoming addicted to NPR podcasts. Today’s “Story of the Day” is about childhood stuffed toys, specifically about a new book called Dirty Wow Wow and Other Love Stories: a tribute to the threadbare companions of childhood by Jeffrey and Cheryl Katz. Here’s a link: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9247459
I think I have that dog on the cover, actually. Well, not THAT dog exactly, etc. The whole thing reminded me of my ancient Winnie the Pooh. Got him when I was…3? 4? I don’t even remember. His red shirt is faded, he has no more eyebrows, and the stuffing in his nose is gone (the nose sinks in). Diana calls him the Michael Jackson Winnie the Pooh. Thanks, that’ll give me nightmares now. I’m sure I have other really old stuffed animals hidden away and I’m tempted to go look for them before the Velveteen Rabbit and Toy Story guilt sets in.

One more thing: Hurray for Spring Break!
