Flights of Memory

By Griff

Midgar, Ten Years Ago…

Cid grinned widely as he flew the skies in the Tiny Bronco, a small plane of his own making and design. It tore through the skies at a rapid speed, commanding them with a skill and grace only Highwind could show. It was a flight he made many times… although this time for once he wasn’t alone. A young woman sat by him, a woman that he greatly admired for her intelligence… and perhaps even loved. And this was quite the new thing for her. She tightly clutched the sides of the plane, looking over at Cid with glasses covered eyes filled with apprehension.

“Ciiiiiiid!” she yelled to the young pilot over the roar of the engine. “Slow down!”

“Now why the Hell would I do that Shera?” he asked, giving her a not so reassuring wink. His sky blue eyes twinkled with mischief as he suddenly added, “Then I couldn’t do THIS!” And with that statement Cid took the small plane into an upwards direction, performing an aerial loop. He was so excited he could barely hear Shera, panting hard with nerves, try again to plead with him.

“Cid… PLEASE be more careful!” she said. “Shinra wouldn’t like it if you crash and…”

“Fuck… don’t worry so damn much Shera! I wont crash!” the pilot replied with a dismissive wave of his hand. “I know these skies like the back of my hand…”

“…Your hands are gloved.” Cid smirked.

“Heheh… Hell. Anyways the fact is I WONT crash and Shinra… well fuck them. Now then where the Hell were we? Oh yeah, NOW I remember!” Cid gave Shera a nod, before taking the plane through an insane series of horizontal barrelrolls.

“CID!” she yelled, but Cid didn’t hear her as he yelled out himself.

“WHOOOOOOO! HELL YEAH!” He turned to Shera, one hand off of the wheel to give her a thumbs up.

Poor Shera by now was nearly passed out when she noticed her glasses were missing. “Cid! My glasses!” she yelled, and both looked down to see them falling towards the hard ground below.

“Heh… no damn worries Shera! We’ll get them!” he replied, and before she could say a thing to him he started into a rapid nosedive.

“CIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID!”

“Yes my name is Cid,” Cid replied, rolling his eyes. “Now hang onto yer drawers and don’t piss in em!” Faster and faster they went down, until at last they passed the glasses and were just inches from the ground. He leveled out the plane then, to where it looked as though it were barely hovering over the ground, and the glasses fell neatly into Shera’s lap.

“Do you realize…” she began sternly. Cid grinned as he finally brought the small plane to a landing… much to Shera’s relief.

“How much damn fun that was? Hell yeah I do!” he interrupted, pulling out his keys and then effortlessly jumping out of the side of the plane. Shera watched a little surprised as he walked over with the strange high-stepping gait of his and opened her door.

“You… you… Highwind you have to be the most egotistical, brash, rude, crass, irresponsible, childish…”

“Don’t forget brave, handsome, smart…”

“SMART?!? Does barraling through the skies sound smart to you Highwind?!? You’re such a…” Cid grinned.

“Pilot,” he replied, giving her a wink. “But soon I’ll be a captain too! Captain of shinra’s rocket engineer team!”

“Dream on,” she replied, shaking her head as she stepped out of the plane. “It would NEVER happen to someone like YOU.”

“Oh yeah?” Cid asked, brow raised. “Bet you I will be captain! And if I am then well… I get to take you to the biggest fucking dinner of your life Shera!”

“Highwind, Highwind, Highwind,” she replied, shaking her head. “Always with your head in the skies. It will NEVER happen, so just move on to something more attainable for you.” She gave an exasperated sigh, as she began to walk off.

“Hey Shera?” Cid asked.

“Yes?”

“Don’t be so damn nervous. Life’s too fuckin’ short for that,” he told her, for once his eyes showing a trace of seriousness in them.

“I’ll… keep that in mind,” she finally replied, and Cid Highwind watched as she walked away. He would prove her wrong, one way or another…
