Narnia fanfiction

This is a gift for shadows_wolf06, who is the mysterious benefactor who gifted me with extra icon space. I've spent most of today gleefully filling that space. :D

Unfortunately I can't think of a title for this, so any suggestions you guys could provide would be very welcome!

Disclaimer: Narnia and these characters are the property of Clive Staples Lewis.

A/N: This is set post-VDT, and after my other Narnia fics.  Dedicated to the lovely shadows_wolf06

It was hard to see the stars in London; even when the sky was, presumably, clear, the lights of the city and the traces of pollution rendered all but the brightest stars invisible. And even when they were visible, to Lucy Pevensie they were wrong.

In another world, she had grown up learning how to navigate by an entirely different set of constellations. She had grown used to watching them sparkle down at her from the towers of Cair Paravel, or between the leaves of trees that danced by moonlight; she could never be lost in Narnia when she could see the stars. The constellations of England grated at her, an irritation that only added to the faint disorientation she often felt now.

The city lights cast a dim orange glow over the night sky; it was never truly black here. Lucy pulled her dressing gown tighter around herself and squinted against it anyway, pressing against the cool metal of the windowsill, eyes trained on the sky. She could just make out the Big Dipper, and some distance away Arcturus shone faintly. A sigh escaped her; they were not Narnian constellations, but they would have to do. She relaxed on the window seat, arms folded on the windowsill and head pillowed on them, gazing up at the stars.

After a while, she frowned; the Big Dipper was changing, stars moving and shifting positions as though some huge invisible hand was moving them around. More stars slowly appeared beside it, also shifting position, and Lucy gasped, heart thudding in recognition and sheer joy as familiar constellations formed. “The Hammer,” she whispered.

The Big Dipper had indeed morphed into the familiar Hammer of Narnia’s northern sky, and there were the Ship and the Leopard, other familiar constellations. And there was Alambil, her soft blue-white light shining like the smile of an old friend. Lucy laughed, her eyes prickling; this was the view from her old royal chambers at Cair Paravel at this time of year.

A warm, wild, delicious scent reached her now and she inhaled deeply, chest aching at the familiarity of it. “Patience, dear heart.” Aslan’s deep rumble resonated around her, in her, promising safety and love and home, and her tears finally began to fall as he whispered her name.

“Lucy. Lucy?” She blinked; Susan was shaking her shoulders. Lucy stared up at her sister, before her head whipped round to stare out the window, but the only things in the sky were the faint English constellations. A familiar fragrance still lingered in the air, though Susan didn’t seem to notice.

“Are you alright, Lucy? You’ll catch your death of cold, sleeping by an open window. Come on, you should get into bed.”

Lucy merely nodded and stood to follow her sister, letting Susan’s worried scolding wash over her.  The memory of Aslan’s voice still echoed in her ears, and she wrapped it around her like a warm blanket, holding on to the promise in it.

She would see the trees and the stars of Narnia again. She would see Aslan.
