Friday Rec, Late Edition!

Aug 17, 2013 14:55

Blame figliaperduta for the delay. It's all me. I make it up to you this week with something (relatively) short, and also that's tied in to this week's meta post!

Title: The Dog and His Boy
Author: planetgal471, who is apparently better known as rhye
Artist: Deathjunke
Characters/Pairings: Sirius, Harry, Remus, various people at Hogwarts, and the Dursleys. Light Sirius/Remus, but only at the very end.
Rating: PG
Word Count: 32,282
Author's Summary: After the canon events of October 1981, Sirius is not captured by Aurors. He transforms into his animagus form, and he follows Harry to the Dursleys'. Harry grows up with the feisty Padfoot as his best friend and companion and thus, when he is accepted into Hogwarts at his 11th birthday, he refuses to come unless he can bring his dog as his familiar. Once at Hogwarts, Snape is behaving suspiciously and mysteries unfold. Can Padfoot prevent harm from befalling the boy he thinks of as his own son? Does Dumbledore suspect that Padfoot is more than just a dog?

I've seen very few fics out there where Sirius has stayed with Harry at the Dursleys throughout the years--abducting him/rescuing him is a far more common theme. One of the things I really like about this story is the way the relationship develops between Padfoot (who stays a dog, around Harry, until circumstances force him to show his true face) and Harry (who thinks he's just got a really smart dog). There's some angst, and some action, and some unbearably cute fluff--keep an eye out for the Gryffindors giving Padfoot a bath for my favourite example of the latter. Fang makes very regular guest appearances, and makes a wonderful foil for Padfoot and his capabilities.

The accompanying art adds a great deal to the atmosphere of the story. The description of Padfoot's enjoyment of a car ride is reflected fully in the pic the description surrounds. There are four pieces of art.

This work was originally submitted as part of the Big Bang Blackout, 2009, entirely focused on Sirius. There are a lot of good medium-to-long fics there, all illustrated. I highly recommend taking a look at their archive, once you're done with this story--it's linked at the bottom of the story page.
