I was reading an
article about the worst popes in history and came across the rule of Pope Sergius III. He ordered the murder of another pope and was the only pope to have fathered an illegitimate son who later became pope. After surfing through Wikipedia about this, I ended up reading about
Saint Sergius and Bacchus. Some historians believe they had a homosexual relationship and "civil union". They were army officers in the Roman Empire. They were forced to parade the streets in women's clothes and were martyred for being Christian. They recently became the patrons of same-sex unions (according to some, obviously). Crazy, huh? This modern icon is kind of hilarious and ironic to me.
