the DC metro region got hit by a nasty it's raining now sleeting, now reaaaaly heavy wet snow!!! on wednesday afternoon.
i left work at about 4:30ish.
Every road was packed, and barely moving. A non-moving car collects rather a lot of snow, so people are constantly getting out to shove snow off of hoods, accumulated on wiper blades, and obscuring windows. I bailed on trying to get home via Great Seneca highway, instead took 355.
After negotiating a refueling, many icy hills, and how Electronic Stability Control can sometimes Not Be Your Friend, *and* several closed roads, i got home at... *drumroll*
about half an hour after midnight. X_X I spent the next 15-20 minutes shoveling out a space to park.
for bonus points, our neighborhood's power was out.
It just came on about 15 minutes ago. I'm still to wound up to sleep just yet.
Ugh. Taking a part day off tomorrow, at least. That was, i can say, the most unpleasant commute i've ever had, and hopefully it'll never be topped. I've had some wretched 'driving in suck-ass weather' experiences, but never spent 8 hours to go (as the unladen sparrow flies) about 7 miles. My slightly more family-circus route took maybe 15-20 miles. I literally could have walked it faster.
