Worth It

‘This isn’t easy.’

It was a statement of the obvious but Josh felt it was worth putting out there, even if it he was just saying it to the restroom mirror.

Not that he had expected it to be easy, far from it, but maybe not quite this difficult. If that made any sense, which he doubted it did because let’s face it, when did he ever run on a proper amount of sleep?

What did you expect? He thought to himself. Assessing his reflection in the mirror. (Was he really as old as he looked?) That professing your love for your best friend was suddenly going to solve all the problems in your life? Good one, Lyman. How’s that for realistic expectations.

Josh sighed and headed out of the restroom, he was running late for a meeting. (Wasn’t he always?)

--

That night, or rather the next morning, he rolled over in the bed towards Sam and whispered to him, ‘I’m not finding this very easy.’

Sam just looked at him. Josh was afraid he’d said the wrong thing. That Sam was going to be upset but instead he paused for a minute, like he did when he was considering what word to put next in an important policy address and whispered back, ‘me neither.’

They looked at each other for a long minute and briefly Josh thought that this might be it, that Sam would decide that it wasn’t worth it and tell Josh that this had to end, because really, how did they think this was ever going to work? Two top-level advisers to the President of the United States, two guys that had so much already going on in their lives? So much that had already gone on in their lives? How could this have ever worked? And then they’d go back to drinking beer and watching the ball game together and casting gazes while they thought the other wasn’t looking across the Roosevelt Room wondering if they’d made the right decision …

But instead of doing any of that, to Josh’s great relief, Sam reached out and placed one of his hands on Josh’s pale chest, ‘but this is worth it.’

--

The next day Josh looked into the same mirror and said to himself, ‘This isn’t easy … but it’s worth it.’

And that got him through the day.
