The darkness is a thing of almost-comfortable familiarity. It demands his full attention, keeps him on his toes, but after his shift at 24 and the throb of the bass still pounding a restless heartbeat against his eardrums, he needs something to push off the excess adrenaline ( ... )

Cheryl is, in fact, nothing if not caught up at the moment. While 'Joe' is busy sneaking around, she's perfectly content whiling away the time on a modded PSP.

At the moment, she is playing Some Generic Fantasy game; the quiet-yet-audible sounds of swords clashing and heros/heroines grunting makes its way across the clearing, somehow managing to avoid catching the other monsters' interests. A particularly intense section suddenly seems to frustrate her; she throws up one hand, yelling as best as she can through stitched lips at the game before going back to playing peaceably.

She is, as is perfectly evident to any onlookers, completely unaware of any threat in her surroundings at the moment.

He watches her for several moments, listening, long enough to hear the tiny indistinct blips of electronic sounds.

At first it looks like too normal-looking of a girl to be mutation, although he can see her mouth's all covered in marks. Not really quite as messed up as some of the other the mutation...but he's not sure if he wants to just hack this one up right away.

...This monster can use something like an NV, after all.

If Riku was telling the truth, and he'd been a monster in the darkness before, after being attacked...

Maybe this was a just-murdered victim, or something.

He draws Soul Eater out and keeps it ready at his side, but settles the weight of one foot on the roundabout, letting the old rusted playground equipment give a wrenching creak.

The creak doesn't immediately set Cheryl on edge, although it certainly catches her attention. She turns at an almost leisurely pace, checking her surroundings before letting her eyes alight on the sound's originator.

Riku? is the third thought to go through the girl's head. However, the first is human, the second is sword, and there's a significant delay in which there's no room for thoughts. Before the resemblance even has time to cross through her head, the black-haired being surges out of the swing, shoving the still running PSP into a side pocket before taking off at a sprint towards the nearest tree. After all, some cover is better than no cover, right ( ... )

Yeah, he spooked her. Usually the more dangerous mutations don't run away at small sounds- it attracts them. So maybe this one is different, with her game and her swing loitering.

He crouches up onto the roundabout, watching her outline disappear into the bushes, catching the reflective glint in her eyes staring back. Another careful glance around the area- no other trouble nearby.

"Hey." Joe finally calls across the park at a half-whisper, something more like a hiss.

"Hey. You just hanging out out here, or what?"

Riku's younger brother (or, at the very least, what she assumes to be) calls out in a slight hiss. After a moment's deliberation, she responds with a slow nod - and after a moment's more, she calls back to the best of her ability. "Mm." Talking is always more difficult when your mouth is stitched shut, after all. Mentally cursing her inconvenient "ability," she reaches for the switchblade in her pocket before freezing. Young man with body armor and a sword does not make for a good thing to draw a weapon on - if he was able to get this close without her noticing, she'd really rather not have to rely on a small pocketknife for defense. Especially if this could be solved with diplomatic methods.

She raises her hands in the air, taking a single step out from behind the tree in the best pantomime she can come up with. I come in peace. Works anywhere, right?
