[ Slade looks up from where he's sitting, legs folded in a typical lotus position. He's been meditating for most of the morning, dealing with the added tension her presence brings in much the way one might expect -- avoidance. There's a limit to how much training one can cram into a day, and he's only social when he has reason to be.

Still, her comment does prompt him to rise and see for himself. His mouth thinning, his brow furrows, just slightly. ]

Probably more.

[Shit. She glowers at the snow as though the intensity in her gaze could possibly send it packing and then she turns, heading back further inside. It's always snow, isn't it. It's going to drive her insane.]

And some people seem to think it's some goddamn conspiracy on the Newcomers' parts.

[She pulls out the earpiece for the first time in two days and tosses it onto her NV. She rubs at her ear.]

Bastards.

[ His mouth twists a little at that, humorless and ironic. ]

You're really surprised?

Surprised? No. Disgusted? You bet I am.

[Goddamn natives. Everything is the fault of Newcomers. She bets some of them get up in the mornings and trip on something only to blame Newcomers. She knows some of the officers kick around the curse well enough.

She shrugs.]

It's just ridiculous. Let's go back to blaming the Core. I was pretty comfortable with that.

[ Wry: ]

It's easier to blame something you can see.

[ Or someone. Newcomers wouldn't be so noticeable if the Core didn't keep showering them with questionable affections. ]

Of course it is. But Newcomers have been around for years. You know that viking bar? The guy who opened it used to be a Newcomer. He won't talk about it, though.

[She folds her hands together and cracks the knuckles on her one hand.]

Too terrified of the stigma.
