lessons learned, bridges burned to the ground

Who: proxysearch and mentis_reae
When: Monday, January 16th, early evening.
Where: Re-l's apartment.
Summary: Finally sitting down and talking about everything they've been avoiding.
Warnings: None.

There's something to be said for burning the candle at both ends. Even for someone like her, there comes a point where she just can't do it anymore. Last night, she thought she'd reached that point. But with a potential for having the Newcomer Killer behind bars, she felt refreshed enough that morning to go to work and get things done. She was glad she did, of course, as she spent hours alone with the suspect and finally had a pretty damn good idea of what she was looking at. They had a partial handwriting sample...and it looked to match the note found on Daisuke's body over a year ago. It was slowly starting to sink in that day as she worked that this might be it. This might be the one she's been looking for. Re-l surprised herself, even, at the elation she felt. Finally, finally, she might be able to make good on her promise to Daisuke.

But all good things do come to an end. Leaving the station made her realize just how tired she was and how busy she'd been. This would be the first night she'd be home in at least a week. She'd been sleeping, but usually in her office or in small increments during the day during her downtime. She was looking forward to relaxing.

Returning to her apartment, however, reminded her that there was one more thing she'd been putting off. When she entered, she immediately caught sight of the boxes and case files that Edgeworth was slowly bringing back to his office. Ah. Yes, she'd been avoiding talking to him about anything too serious for days, mostly because he'd just come back and she'd already seen how von Karma's presence had taken a toll on him. She didn't want to push him any further than was necessary. She'd seen him last night, too, trying to help preserve the buildings and heal the wounded. They were quite a pair, she had to admit. She could deny it all she wanted but she knew, deep down, that they were just a little too similar in some ways. He deserved to know the truth, that she knew about von Karma...and that she knew they'd both been somewhat avoiding each other in lieu of work for too long.

Re-l set about starting to work on dinner, realizing (again) that she hadn't cooked in nearly a week and had been living off of whatever was in the freezer or the food she'd get at the station. The television in the living room stayed on so she could listen to the news while she waited for everything to finish cooking in the oven and she made herself comfortable on the couch, going through her own work while she waited.

re-l mayer, miles edgeworth
