She stood quickly, dizzy but determined. But this place didn't look like the train tracks. She looked up. And rain hadn't been in the forecast for the day, either. She glanced down at her body, her hands feeling for any gaping wounds or broken bones. Nothing, not even blood on her clothing. She felt something in her jacket and opened it up, finding a tablet-like device.
She tried to shield it from the rain as best as she could while trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

Making her way over Helen took a quick moment to analyse the situation - disorientation, as usual from the pull of the Core, but seemingly no injuries. She was lucky - many that Helen had seen arrive had been worse than her.
It didn't take long to cross the field and soon Helen was by her, moving her umbrella to shelter the young girl from the rain. "Are you all right?" A relative question, but it would help her to know of any injuries or conditions that Helen couldn't detect by eye. Everyone took to the Port and hearing of it differently and she couldn't help but wonder how this would turn.

"I'm afraid that I can't quite answer what is going on, however, that's a little unknown to even those that have been here for several years." She gives the girl an apologetic smile.
"My name's Helen. Would you prefer to sit somewhere? What I do know can be a rather long explanation." And shocking.

"I'm Claire." She kept her voice even. "Sure, yeah. That sounds good." She almost asked Helen if she had a phone, then decided against it. She'd wait until she felt a little better to call her father. Out wasn't like she would get hurt until then.

"Where are you from?" It was something to hopefully break the ice a little before giving Claire the story. She could tell she was American but her accent placing wasn't entirely accurate.
Reply
"California," she replied. It wasn't a complete lie, after all. "How did I end up here?"
Reply
"It may be a little unbelievable, although I can assure you that what I'm telling you is true." She'd heard all the reactions; disclaimers helped. "There's a device known as the Core. Little is known off it due to the lack of permissable research but what we've been told is that it is what brings us to Siren's Port."
Reply
"A device?" She tried to get that information to sink in. "Like a machine that brings people to Canada?" She looked down at her hands. It was similar to Hiro's ability, but a human wasn't responsible for it. For some reason, a machine with powers was harder to process than a person. "Where is it?"
She might be considering breaking the damn thing to see if that would send her home.

"Unfortunately that isn't all that it does." And this was the kicker. "There are individuals here that possess abilities, either ones that they had prior to their arrival or ones that have been discovered after arriving here. Somehow, and there's no conclusive explanation for this, but it would seem that arriving here either gives or awakens an ability." Helen hoped that she was keeping up without becoming overwhelmed.

"People get abilities here?" She paused. At least, in this case, she wouldn't be the only freak around. As terrible as that sounded. "Sounds like some sort of science fiction movie. And this whole being brought here thing...people are just chosen randomly? Or do they use us for something?"
Reply
"It would appear to be random, at least until any sentience of the Core can be determined." Artificial Intelligence? Perhaps not, but an entity inhabiting it? It could be. "Thr same could be said to the abilities received, also. After we're here our lives are our own. For your first month you're provided with a free accommodation, although after that you need to pay rent to remain in the apartment or rent elsewhere. There are schools and jobs available, although for those that already reside here - ones not classed as Newcomers, not all are quite as welcoming." It was better to give her it straight, right?

The idea of not being able to leave hadn't occurred to her. She didn't even want to consider it.

"What else should I know about this place?" She had a feeling she really didn't want to know, but it would be better in the long run to know as much about this city as possible.

"There are two sirens that sound daily - one in the morning and one in the evening. The sirens are very important to remember - they mark the safety within the city." At least the safety from the Darkness. "With the evening siren comes the Darkness - something more than simply night. The Darkness brings with it dangers in the forms of creatures, ones that do not listen and cannot be reasoned with. If they have the opportunity they will kill you." Did she sound like she'd seen this before? She'd seen it both on the street and in the hospital ( ... )
