Mary actually has a habit of getting home on time, given everything. She tends to err on the side of caution, coming home too early and having an extra hour or forty minutes to kill. It would happen that this week she's been getting bolder, cutting it closer and slipping in with just a few minutes to spare. So tonight she's three blocks away from the Towers when the power goes out. Her first reaction is to reach for her new watch. When the light won't come on, she immediately draws her gun, loads it with real bullets, and gets against the side of the building she's passing- the better to not lose her way and blunder into traffic.
Then start the screams. Damn, she thinks hurriedly, mind full of cold spots and cattle killings. The Darkness. People are going to die, she realizes, and she takes off in the direction of the nearest scream.
Griffin hasn't been checking up on his NV besides his own private messages. He already heard from Carrie but he was still waiting on Sarina to return. Because he was so cut off, he didn't notice his NV switch off. He iss sitting on the beach, cleaning off his weapons. It's a rare moment of peace. It's only natural that it got shot all to hell. Griffin was perfectly content before a particularly large combination frog and snake descended upon him with no warning.
Mary won't make it too far in her journey away from the Towers. The Towers, as the name suggests, are a very decent height from the ground. They're perfect for jumping off of if you have a huge Night Naga in your grip that you're trying to kill without weapons. Griffin is falling through the air, monster in tow. The monster lands but ten feet away from Mary. Griffin, meanwhile, had Jumped out of the predicament. He is a couple feet behind Mary with his back turned to her.
"SON OF A BITCH!" Mary screams, whirling around with her gun brandished in one hand. The other is held in front of her face protectively, blocking her from the unseen attacker. Suddenly there's a whip of brightness in front of her arcing with her hand, lighting up the scene - a flash of monster and man - before it goes dark and she's staggering back.
"What the- who's there?" she demands, but the one little tongue of light winging away to her side catches and suddenly she realizes it's fire, fire catching onto a garbage can and sending it alight.
In all of the falling and madness, Griffin hadn't realized that there was a person nearby. Whoops. He turns and... why does he feel warm? He looks down and to his great surprise, realizes that somehow his leather jacket caught fire on one of the sleeves. "Gah!" He rips the jacket off and beats it against the ground to put it out. Fortunately, there isn't a lot of damage done.
"Jesus, lady, watch where you're shooting!" He has no idea where the fire really came from, but he knows his flamethrower is safe on the beach and the beast he just killed isn't one of the fiery ones. His next assumption is to blame the unfamiliar looking woman yelling at him.
"Oh my god, are you okay?" Mary has no freaking idea what's going on, and looks at her gun with shock, as if it somehow shot fire at him, before she gets her head back. Of course it wasn't her. Get it together, Winchester. "I didn't shoot you, okay? I don't know how that happened. Are you hurt or aren't you?"
She'll have time to stare at the fire and rock back and forth later. Saving people takes precedence over trauma reactions.
He lifts his jacket to check for any severe damage, conveniently blocking him from the woman. It's is slightly singed, but otherwise okay. This is honestly Griffin's top concern. Well it's not the first time he's been set on fire or killed something by dropping it from a great height. "I'm fine."
Adrenaline is pumping through his body, but he does get his senses back very quickly. He realizes that there is a bigger problem than his jacket. He lowers it to look at the unfamiliar woman with a questioning gaze. "Hey, did the sirens go off?"
"Good," she pants with relief. At least the guy's okay. Now it's all down to assessment and damage control; at least the light from the fire helps with that. Even if she has to turn her back to the flames so she can't see them, and talk so she can't hear them crackle, lest she start screaming and never stop. Her heart pounding is normal, she tells herself. Adrenaline. "No. The streetlights all went out with the rest of the power and the Darkness just came without warning."
He shrugs his jacket back onto his body. Concern furrows his brow. "I didn't think so. That's... There's something wrong." Griffin has been in Siren's Port for almost a year. Not once can he recall the sirens missing their cue. Everyone in town relies on those things.
He suddenly remembers that he's talking to someone. Griffin takes stock of the woman. He's pretty sure she's been on the Network before, although he doesn't recall ever talking to her. Well, she's there, might as well get some information out of her. "Any idea why? Like, anything weird happen today?"
He realizes that's a stupid question as soon as it comes out of his mouth. It's Siren's Port. Of course something weird happened today.
"I don't know," she shrugs. "It's the Port- doesn't something weird always happen?"
Mary wipes her forehead with her hand and looks around, taking a step closer to the young man if for nothing else than strength in numbers. The flickering firelight is banishing the Darkness somewhat, and gives her the light needed to check her watch again. "Look." Mary nudges him and holds out her wrist, demonstrating the watch backlight's failure to come on. "The power outage- I think it's everything battery powered."
Griffin does peer at her watch when asked. This makes him reach into his pocket and pull out his NV, which looks a hell of a lot like a PSP. He hits the power switch and nothing happens. He smacks it a couple times and nothing also happens. "Damn it."
More and more, the sounds of distress start to seep through the area. Griffin looks over his shoulder, the familiar Darkness covers everything and no one is prepared. "Fuck, it's gonna be a massacre."
Not that Mary has the foggiest fucking clue what a PSP is. She groans when his NV doesn't work, and looks around with him.
"Absolute pandemonium, and it's already started." Then she makes a snap decision. "Come on, this way. There's a women's shelter over there and I've seen a lot of teenagers coming and going. Something will happen."
Griffin takes a step back and lifts his hands. "Whoa, whoa." He looks at her, slightly affronted and very confused. It's quickly made clear that Griffin isn't the Good Samaritan type of man. "What are you asking me for? Do I look like a woman to you?"
Is she joking? His hands fall casually to his sides. Griffin takes stock of this woman for a brief second. He's inexplicably reminded of... Well, something ridiculous and that he shouldn't be thinking of right at this second. It takes a moment for him to respond to The Look, but he does by crossing his arms over his chest and giving her a look of his own. His is much more the epitome of not giving a damn. "I'm sorry, what makes you think I care?" Griffin sarcastically looks over his person. "Do I have a bleeding heart on me somewhere?"
Mary's eyes narrow and she crosses her arms in a classic you-done-fucked-up Mom look. "So you just like to point massacres then calmly walk by without doing anything to stop them? What, so you can mark them down on your calendar? You don't have any desire to rise to the occasion and help your fellow man from being savaged by monsters?"
She may or may not notice that Griffin's arms cross themselves just a little bit tighter. He hasn't heard that tone of voice or seen that look in about thirteen years. Funnily enough, it's his dad that he's thinking of, not his mom.
"Well you know," he replied, more nasty than before, "You have to keep track of those massacres. How else am I gonna know when to buy my popcorn so I have something to eat while I sit back and laugh?"
Then start the screams. Damn, she thinks hurriedly, mind full of cold spots and cattle killings. The Darkness. People are going to die, she realizes, and she takes off in the direction of the nearest scream.
