[ It had been difficult getting William to agree to a party in the first place; but finally, after much cajoling, he had agreed to the following terms: a small, intimate party, consisting only of mutual friends. Refreshments were to consist of tea and biscuits. The party was scheduled to start at 4pm and end promptly at six.
One of the reasons William insisted on such spartan terms is that, having just moved, they are still somewhat embarrassed in terms of their furnishings, having only folding chairs and a card table at this point.
So why is Grell now, the day of the party, whiling away the afternoon in the flat next door? Firstly, it's because he invited himself over, bearing a bottle of red wine. Secondly - and most importantly - it's because he has made certain arrangements such that the host of a much more convivial party isn't himself at all! ]
