After some discussions, Onyx and Emma and Michael had agreed to meet at the House of Awesome on Sunday at noon, brunch to be included. Michael and Emma gave Onyx directions from the Baxter Street subway stop and a warning that while the house was nice, the neighborhood was run down.

[OOC: The Baxter Street subway stop is in Sector 4: middle class to lower class. The HoA is only about three blocks away, but it's right on the border between Sector 4 and Sector 9 (lower class to slums).]

Well, the warning was nice to have. Otherwise she'd have changed her mind about wanting to live here even before she'd ever set foot into it. So she was skeptical, after seeing the neighborhood, but not entirely turned off, as she arrived at the door and waited to be shown in.

"Hello, Onyx," said the blond woman opening the door. The opened door reveals only a vestibule, with a few places to sit, a closed door on the other side and a more complicated arrangement of buzzers next to the door. The porch, at least, is a step up from the neighborhood.

The woman continued, "As you have probably guessed, I'm Emma. Michael is throwing something together for brunch. Come on in."

[OOC: Onyx would be familiar with the enter-into-a-small-room design from castles; it does help against ground attacks.]

She glanced back as soon as the door was opened, already looking more pleasant. She'd learned a good deal about interacting politely with humans during her six-month stay in the similarly contemporary City. She entered with a quick glance around (one can never be too sure what might be trapped, after all) and headed for a seat.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Emma." No, that didn't seem quite like enough in the way of manners. She'd have to layer it on a little more. "Thanks for taking the time to see me."

She'd cringe over it later, paying so much respect to a human, but it would do for now.

(No traps visible with a quick scan, but the construction is fortress-solid.)

"It's good to meet you too, Onyx. We'll still have to see if you fit here, but I'm glad you're considering us: the place is beginning to feel empty with the recent departures."

Emma swings the outer door shut, then crosses to the inner door and opens it without a key. "We normally keep the outer door unlocked even after Sirens," she explains, "and the inner door unlocked much of the time, but not after Sirens. However, the locking mechanism is set up so that you can only open one set if the other is already closed."

The door opens onto a hallway leading to a larger room; there's a second door opening off the hallway. If Onyx has a good sense of smell she can smell fresh bread coming from the room to the side of the hallway.

She watches these proceedings with only some interest. Although-- hmm. If there are powers as prevalent around here as she's been lead to believe, her trick of teleporting in and out of places might be stifled by some power-blocker or another. That would be annoying. The thought makes her pay just a touch more attention.

She follows peaceably enough, gradually liking the look of the place more and more. It's certainly better than the neighborhood around it.

The inside of the building isn't rich, but it's well-made and comfortable. Emma shows Onyx around the first floor, including a huge kitchen where an older man that Onyx can recognize from their NV chat is cooking.

She glances with some interest at the older human, offering a greeting of a polite smile and a nod. Manners. She can totally do manners.

Francis had been in earlier and due to both of them, there is not only several types of bread rising, but several loaves in the ovens. He did have an apron on, because flour on dark pants was a pain to clean off, but the top was folded and tucked and tied around his waist. His sleeves where up, lights glinting off a silver and iron braclet around his left wrist. He was watching the pans and pots, metal utensils stirring one pot, tongs turning in a pan, another tossing itself.

"Hello."

"Francis does most of our household cooking," Emma says, "and Michael does most of the rest. Each apartment has a kitchen if you want to do some of your own cooking."

Francis-- a name she recognizes. She's met that one. Even tried said cooking. It's nice to know the food here will be good. She aims a smile at the man, adds a, "Hello yourself," and looks at least marginally impressed by the hands-off cooking display.

"How efficient." The cooking? The kitchens in the apartments? The apartment-wide communal meals? The world may never know.

"And tasty," Emma adds with a slight smile, "don't forget tasty. Onyx, let me finish showing you around while Michael finishes cooking."

The unoccupied apartments are well put-together but only furnished with kitchen appliances, beds, and occasional chairs. There's an enclosed roofdeck with a garden and a large set of pools down in the basement.

"You're looking for a new apartment sooner than most arrivals," Emma observes, as she conducts Onyx back downstairs to where lunch is ready.
