[it's a question to the air, but Shiroe's eyes are locked on those white puffballs around the mound. he has a tilt to his head and a curious smile on his face, but he's not yet stepping within reaching distance of it.]
[the day had been interesting as a whole, he'd felt, but this was interesting in a particular way. had they started up after the earthquake? maybe the Core had mutated whatever fungi had already started on those gross bases...]
[well, there were plenty of theories to be had. was there a for-sure answer?]

She walks up beside the boy, hands in her back pockets, leaning forward. ]
Look at that. I certainly don't remember seeing those when I arrived. Weird, huh?

How long ago'd you arrive? It was recently, right?

Yeah, bit over a month. It feels like it's already been forever though.

-- Like this. What do you think they are? Besides mushrooms.

I'm not sure, to be honest. Gotta be something though, yeah?
[ Amy takes a step forward and jerks her head to the side, signaling him to follow. she has a feeling they're going to be disappointed and that they're just plain ol' mushrooms, but you could never be sure in this place where the whole city changes at night. ]

[he would, eventually, if they didn't suddenly burst into fire. but he was exercising a bit of caution-- moving just as slowly as she did, rounding around rather than rushing up. they really did look like normal mushrooms, aside from the fact that they seemed to be combusting on their own.]

[ act now, think later. that was usually how she did things, but she doesn't rush right up the odd looking puffs either. she's suspicious but endlessly curious. and the closer she got to them, the weirder they looked - almost like they were alive. ]
That's weird...
[ she bends down at her knees, leaning forward and getting a closer look. ]

[he'd also only ever experienced mushrooms by way of the grocery store and random street talk, so while he was cautious, he was also rather endlessly curious. what a pair they made.]
[she crouched down, and he rounded around, kneeling next to another patch of the things.]
[they did sort of look alive...--]
What's weird? [absently. funny, one of them seemed to almost be moving.]

[ she jokes, because while it's a good point, it seems unlikely to happen until she picks it up or puts it in her mouth. she scrunches up her nose, thinking too long on it. ]
It looks like... well, like it's growing-
[ and sure enough, one of the mushrooms was pulsing slightly and with a quiet pop, it bursts. Amy instantly falls back onto her hand, startled by the sudden explosion that seems to send tiny particles into the air. ]

[he'd started backwards, when his own patch had started to pop; but then it was like a domino effect, one after the other, and the spores in the air were thick enough that Shiroe had to squint against them.]
[they clogged up his mouth, his nose, and it was all rather unpleasant. he gave a cough as he started to his feet, not backing up before he'd scooped up one of the burst bulbs - but once he did have one, yeah, he was out of there like a rabbit.]
[not that there was really an 'out of there,' since more and more were popping. but still. it was the thought that counted.]

she puts her hand to her chest, waiting for the constricting to subside. and it does, eventually. but there's still a slight burning, and it's going straight to her head. ]
Guess I... [ deep breath. ] -spoke too soon.

[not a word, but Shiroe doesn't care; he has his hand to his mouth, and he's trying valiantly to hold his breath in the face of the horrible burn in his lungs. his eyes, too-- actually, no, it's his stomach, his stomach's completely turning over, and...]
... Nngh...
[he hadn't felt like this since he'd collapsed in the museum from a mental overload. okay, holding your breath doesn't work-- he's being wrecked with coughs.]

[ she doesn't get to finish her thought as the entire ground seems to shift under her feet, so she has to stop and steady herself. ]
You okay?
[ Amy finally manages to ask, though it comes out sounding like one word. she's ready to be sick herself. ]

... I guess they were supposed to do that.
